Built by the GWR at Swindon in 1897, this original train carriage near the coast in St Germans has been sensitively converted and now provides a comfortable, characterful and unique place for those in search of train carriage holidays. It also has an M3 National Accessibility Scheme rating, making it suitable for wheelchair users.
IIf you're looking for unique stays in Cornwall, or specifically for train carriage holidays, then this is the place to go. With three third class compartments and a guard’s compartment complete with ‘duckets’ (a protrusion beyond the normal profile of the train with narrow windows so that the guard could sit in it and look along the train without putting his head out of the window), the Millpool Train Carriage is full of old-school atmosphere and charisma. The interiors are cosy and well thought out, the village of St Germans is peaceful and pretty, and Cornwall’s beautiful countryside and coastline are just a stone’s throw away.
The carriage sits in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Special Scientific Interest, so it is the ideal base for walking, cycling, bird watching, horse riding and water sports holidays. There are books on walking for you to peruse and the coast path is a short bus ride away. St Germans is a small village it is a lovely tranquil setting for a stay in a train carriage. Just a 5 minute walk away is The Eliot Arms, a charming village pub which serves Cornish ales and delicious food, and next door is a traditional community shop and post office, which has an excellent stock of food, household supplies, alcohol and newspapers. The Port Eliot Estate (open March to late June) is close by, as are Antony House and Mount Edgcumbe. If you’re looking for beaches within easy access of this holiday rental in Cornwall, head for Whitsand Bay, and the fishing towns of Looe and Saltash are lovely. Plymouth, 15 minutes away by train, has plenty to offer visitors and Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are not far away.
