One-Off Feature

Nestled in over half an acre of gardens, Harvey is a beautifully converted 1950s corridor coach which offers a heady nostalgia trip back to the magical days of steam trains. Retaining almost all of its original British Rail features, Harvey is totally unique. A stay in a train carriage is one of the most memorable things you will ever do!

General Info

The coach is set in the coastal town of Hayle in West Cornwall, just one stop from the branch line to St Ives and a short stroll from 3 miles of golden sands.Harvey has been thoughtfully converted but it also manages to retain all the charm and quirkiness of its glory days. Think compartments, lamp shades and luggage racks, as well as original mirrors and upholstery. A railway carriage holiday really is a trip down memory lane!

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Situated on the North coast of Penwith in the far West of Cornwall, Hayle is a thriving town with lots to interest all ages. Miles of dunes and golden sand make it perfect for a beach holiday, not to mention a popular spot with surfers, and the area is criss-crossed with footpaths and cycling trails. This part of Cornwall has a wealth of archaeological heritage (Penwith itself is peppered with stone circles, quoits and burial chambers) and the artistic hub of St Ives is just down the road. You could bird watch in the Hayle Estuary, take the children to see the otters and penguins at Paradise Park, go horse riding or fishing, wander round gardens and National Trust properties, or spend a day on the Scilly Isles. Hayle itself has retained its individual character and has a good selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes and takeaways, as well as supermarkets and specialist food shops.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details

Harvey was originally conceived as two lets, but now is only ever let to one party at a time. This gives great flexibility when coming on holiday with extended family and friends, as each end has its own kitchen, living room and toilet/shower facilities. For a romantic break for two, or for smaller parties, the East End can be booked alone and the West End left empty. The East End has a double bedroom and bunk room so can comfortably host families of up to six. Add the West End for an additional £120, for a further double bedroom with above bed bunk. Both ends include lounge/dining compartments that covert to single beds should you wish to have additional accommodation, so if you don’t mind a squash and a squeeze, when all the beds are in use Harvey can accommodate parties of up to 13. Unlimited wifi is available. Both ends have a TV, DVD player and CD player/radio.
For train enthusiasts of all ages, there is a train viewing deck. Harry Potter fans - this carriage is just like the one on the Hogwart’s Express!

Exterior Details

Perhaps the biggest selling point of Harvey is its wonderful enclosed gardens. Set in half an acre of formal and wildlife gardens, Harvey has a signalbox playhouse that doubles as a bird hide, a herb and butterfly garden, wildlife pond, swings, a swingball, camp fire area with brazier, fruit trees and a nut grove. There are wooden sun decks on each end where you can sit and breathe in the invigorating sea air, and a BBQ for those long summer evenings al fresco.

Further Details

A stay in a train carriage does not have to lack comfort and here electricity, hot water and central heating are all included, as are linen and towels. We have strived to make this carriage perfect for families, with swings, toys, books, DVDs and more. We have also make this an eco-friendly holiday, with full recycling and compost facilities, a green energy supply, cash back if you arrive by public transport and a wild area for butterflies and birds. 2015 winners of the Gold Awards for Sustainable Tourism and for Wildlife Friendly Business in the Visit Cornwall Awards.
