One-Off Feature

Accessed by a long, winding, floating pontoon, and with a firepit suspended over the lake, Lapwing is a romantic retreat in Devon like no other.  Secluded on a 5 acre lake, this glamping pod is a luxury off grid escape, with a private deck and canoe.  Wild swimming, star gazing, and nature all around.  This property is part of our holidays in Devon collection of unique and unusual places to stay, and part of our Romantic Getaways collection.

General Info

Lapwing is one of three pods on site, all totally secluded from one another.  The 5 acre spring fed lake is hidden within a secluded mature woodland.  The lake is fed by natural underground springs and there’s a waterfall which aerates the waters year round.  The area has a thriving ecosystem with a diverse range of plants and animals.  There is a wide variety of fish, and even a family of beavers living in a burrow at the lake’s edge.  There is an abundance of birdlife - watch herons and kingfishers hunt for food, see the swallows swoop across the lake, watch the raptors soar, and spot owls at dusk.  The farm is 40 acres and guests are welcome to explore the trails through the woodland around the lake and alongside the vineyard.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

You might not be able to drag yourself away during your stay - perhaps you'd rather spend your time swinging in the hammock on your deck, wild swimming, and heading out in your canoe.  Or visiting the on site vineyard and restaurant (pre booking necessary).  If you choose to head out, you’ll find local pubs and farm shops galore.  Visit Lydford Gorge, the deepest gorge in the southwest with its stunning waterfall.  Climb up Brat Tor for panoramic countryside views, or visit Castle Drogo, the last ever castle to be built in England.   The coast is less than a 30 minute drive.  Visit the picturesque seaside village of Hope Cove, the ancient fishing village of Clovelly, or the dramatic setting of Tintagel with its ruined castle.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
The pods are designed entirely to be a light touch on the environment.  They are sustainable, low carbon and ecologically responsible.  They are made from locally grown timbers, designed and handbuilt locally in Devon.  They produce 100% of their power with renewable energy; there is no connection to the national grid or sewer system.   They have their own solar power, they are fully insulated making them suitable for year round stays, and they have their own grey water processing system.  These truly off grid stays are a benchmark for ecologically responsible off grid glamping.  Each pod is cosy, comfortable and well equipped for two.  The lounge area has a wood burning stove, as well as a bluetooth speaker and games, books, maps and binoculars.  The kitchen area has a twin gas hob, kettle, cafetiere and fridge with a small freezer compartment.  The bedroom has a king size bed with luxurious bamboo bed linen and lake views.  There is a bathroom with a walk in power shower, towels and toiletries provided.

Exterior Details
Outside on the deck you’ll find a firepit area suspended over the lake, as well as a BBQ (logs, kindling and firelighters provided), and cosy seating designed for stretching out, relaxing, and soaking up the lake views.  The pod has its own Canadian canoe moored up next to a suspended water hammock.  Paddles and buoyancy aids are supplied.  There is a lake ladder to help with getting in and out of the lake for some wild swimming.  With no light pollution in the surrounding area, the stargazing is outstanding on a clear night.

Conditions
Once you’ve booked you’ll receive a digital guide which is packed with all the information and local knowledge you’ll need for your stay.  The site is for adults only.  Sorry, no dogs.  Check in from 3pm, check out by 10am.  Please note, this is a digital detox experience and there is no mobile signal or wifi at the pods.  If you need to check in with the outside world, there is wifi at The Vineyard Cafe, 5 mins walk from the pod.
