Catalonia - best known for its independent language (Catalan) and the beautiful city of Barcelona, one of Europe's most popular urban destinations.  Catalonia also has an extensive coastline, from the rugged and wild Costa Brava in the north, to the golden sand beaches of the Costa Daurada in the south.  And what's more, you've got high mountain ranges (most especially the Pyrenees), national parks, excellent gastronomy, peace and tranquility.  What's not to like?!

If you’re coming from the UK, it’s just a hop across the channel.  It means you can take your own car (or rely on one of the many budget airlines for a good value flight) and you won’t end up spending most of your holiday travelling to and from your villa / holiday house.

This does of course make it a very popular destination, but it’s easy enough to get off the beaten track if you want to, and you certainly don’t need to spend fortunes to stay somewhere lovely, whether it’s a traditional village dwelling or a luxurious villa overlooking the sea.
