  With their superb situation in the mountain hamlet of Basieda looking across the valley to distant Picos de Europa peaks, the Olmares apartments are perfect for doing nothing at all should you so choose. But Olmares’ true ‘raison d’etre’ is walking, birdwatching, wildlife and wildflowers – all of which you will find here in abundance.

  General Info  
  When the owners came to ‘build’ the Olmares apartments they started with a ruin but the original outline was still quite visible. There had been 5 individual dwellings centred round a communal courtyard. They were small traditional dwellings with animal quarters below each one. They are now 4 spacious 2-person apartments (50 sqm) and one 4-person apartment (75 sqm) with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. This has been achieved by largely using the original outline, oak timbers and stone. The greatest care has been taken to ‘isolate’ each apartment, in terms of noise, from its neighbours and the best possible furnishing and accessories have been used – even the wide picture windows and French doors are double glazed – thus keeping out summer heat and in winter warmth.  
 
  Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation  
  De-stress and enjoy the beauty and peace of this unspoilt place. Take in the pure air, the sun, the bright starry nights. The walking round here is marvellous and as easy or difficult as you choose. You will find a map of walks in the house. The owners live nearby and will help and advise you when you want. The area is quite exceptional for birding, flowers, trees, butterflies, mushrooms and general flora and fauna due to the unspoilt countryside. The dawn chorus can make you feel happy to be alive and the variety of flowers can make a walk seem like going through a perfect rock garden. Liébana is steeped in history so there are lots of places to visit - many of them within walking distance of Basieda. The nearest town for shopping is Potes, 15km away. There are several local restaurants - three within 1 ½ km. Bread baked in wood-fired ovens is brought up the mountain every second day.  
 
  Getting there & away/local amenities  
  Getting There: Basieda can be reached by ferry to Santander or Bilbao, by flights to Bilbao, Santander or Madrid or by road through France. Bookings can normally start on any day of the week to enable you to take advantage of cheap mid-week airfares etc. The apartment will generally be ready for your arrival between 4 and 6 pm and you are requested to leave by 10.00 am.

  Interior Details The sitting-room part of the open plan living area, with its polished chestnut floor has a truly magnificent view across the valley below to the high mountains beyond. This is very comfortably furnished and has the feeling of a real home. There is a small TV with English satellite and Spanish channels as well as a bookcase, coffee table and reading lamps. The fitted kitchen has work surfaces of Brazilian marble and is fitted with a ceramic hob, microwave/grill, fridge and comprehensive range of kitchen-ware including kettle, toaster, pots, teapot, cafetiere and ‘tools’. The 2 bedroom apartment also has an oven and dishwasher.

  Exterior Details The terrace or balcony, depending on which apartment you have, runs the full width of the apartment and is therefore very substantial – wide enough for easy sunbathing, eating outdoors and birdwatching.  
 
  Further Details Apart from your private sitting room there is also a communal 'salón'. This has 2 levels – a mezzanine where you can sit and read or practise your Spanish with the tapes and books provided or watch television on the large TV and DVD player. On the main floor there is further comfortable seating and an impressive and very efficient wood-burning stove for winter times. Here you will find bookshelves full of maps and reference books on anything from flowers to birds to trees and animals. There are also books on walks and climbing etc. together with 2 fat folders of local information mostly provided by those who have been here and done it. This friendly room is the hub of Olmares – used by everyone to plan the day ahead or exchange information and compare notes.  
 
  Conditions of
Rental
To confirm your booking we ask for 25% of the rent in advance. In the event of cancellation less than eight weeks before your stay this deposit is non-refundable. The balance is payable on your arrival and also a deposit of €60 (€120 for the large apartment) to cover breakages, damage and any extra cleaning. The refundable deposit will be posted to you by sterling cheque or transferred online to your UK account within a week of your departure. Prices include: water, wood, electricity, central heating, bed-linen (real sheets, not nylon), towels & tea towels, cleaning products and starter breakfast pack. The apartments are not suitable for young children. Children over 12 are welcome in the large apartment.

We just wanted to drop you a line and say a huge thank you for providing such a fabulous base for our recent holiday. We had a great time and the apartment far exceeded our expectations. We went on from you to SW France and have to say our heart sank when we saw our gite as is was a bit of a let down after staying at Olmares. The Picos de Europa mountains are certainly a fabulous place to be and no doubt we will return sometime.
