One-Off Feature

Once a historic sailing barge from the late 1800s, Onderneming has undergone a sympathetic yet innovative transformation and is now a contemporary and luxurious floating holiday cottage. This is a truly unique place to stay.

General Info

Moored on the south bank of the River Orwell, where Arthur Ransome set his wonderful ‘Swallows and Amazons’ series, Onderneming was built in 1899 and has been lovingly renovated to provide a memorable getaway for families, couples and groups of friends. No expense was spared in the conversion so you can expect to find all the best bits of modern living, and yet the boat still retains many of its original features, from the portholes and panelling inside to the wheel and colossal dagger boards on the outside. And you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to relax and unwind, with far reaching views of the water, a fantastic pub on your doorstep and picturesque river walks in both directions.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

The barge is moored on the River Orwell at Pin Mill, a gorgeous little hamlet halfway between Ipswich and the sea. The incredibly popular Butt & Oyster pub is literally next door and all around you is the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just waiting to be explored. The towns of Woodbridge, Orford and Aldeburgh are all within half an hour of the boat, or you could carry on up the coast a little to Dunwich, Walberswick and Southwold.

Getting There & Local Amenities

Getting There:
Come to Junction 56 of the A14 on the edge of Ipswich. Take the first exit off the roundabout and down the big hill by the dry ski-slope. At the bottom of the slope take the 2nd exit off the roundabout towards Shotley. This will take you under the Orwell Bridge and past the Suffolk Food Hall. A few miles along that road you’ll come into the village of Chelmondiston, where you’ll see a sign on the left for ‘Pin Mill’ and the ‘Butt & Oyster Inn’. Turn down here and Onderneming is on the river at the end of this tiny lane.
