Mevy is a true Victorian gem - a railway carriage with three classes of compartment and a guard's van, each with its own special character, from the sumptuous upholstery and English gold details of first class, to the triple bunk bed with patchwork throws in the guard's room. The view over rolling hills, the pretty village location, the proximity to some of Cornwall's best coastline...
This 1896 GWR clerestorey roofed slip coach provides accommodation for up to 5 people and has a completely unique character. Slip coaches were put at the back of fast trains and uncoupled manually by the guard, who then brought the carriage to a halt at the station. Because they had to cater for all classes in one coach, Mevy has first, second and two third class compartments, as well as a guard's room, and all the compartments have been cleverly and individually restored and furnished. This is a truly memorable little bolthole.
The carriage sits in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Special Scientific Interest, so it is the ideal base for walking, cycling, bird watching, horse riding and water sports holidays. There are books on walking for you to peruse and the coast path is a short bus ride away. St Germans is a small village it is a lovely tranquil setting for a stay in a train carriage. Just a 5 minute walk away is The Eliot Arms, a charming village pub which serves Cornish ales and delicious food, and next door is a traditional community shop and post office, which has an excellent stock of food, household supplies, alcohol and newspapers. The Port Eliot Estate (open March to late June) is close by, as are Antony House and Mount Edgcumbe. If you’re looking for beaches, head for Whitsand Bay, and the fishing towns of Looe and Saltash are lovely. Plymouth, 15 minutes away by train, has plenty to offer visitors and Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are not far away.

The coach is approximately 8 by 38 feet and has a sumptuous 1st class double bedroom with a bevelled mirror and maple and mahogany panelling, as well as a second bedroom (the old guard’s room) with 3 bunk beds. The central second and third class compartments offer an open living space, and we have tried to re-capture the essence of Victorian carriage style by fitting this area with handmade carriage seating and Victorian-style fabric. This area has a fitted kitchen, a table and a TV/DVD player. The bathroom, which is situated in the other third class compartment, has a real flushing toilet, a roll top bath with shower, a washbasin and a shaver socket.
Outside there is a private deck with seating and BBQ facilities and there is also a garden area where children can play safely. The carriage also comes with private car parking and access to a children’s play area and games room.
Free broadband internet access is available and there are laundry facilities. 2015 winners of the Gold Awards for Sustainable Tourism and for Wildlife Friendly Business in the Visit Cornwall Awards.
