One-Off Feature

The Hayloft is one of three grade II listed two bedroom cottages which make up Tithe Barn, located on East Durham’s Heritage Coast.  Three recently converted cottages are housed in the same building, so you can book all three if you are a larger group, and be perfectly situated for exploring the Durham coastline.

General Info

The owners have lovingly restored this beautiful 13th century building, preserving lots of original features including a Saxon window, ancient door and oak beams dating back to the time of King Henry VIII.  The cottages adjoin the family farm which is located within Easington Village.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Tithe Barn is about three miles from the coast so you have excellent access to the beautiful Durham coastline from your holiday let.  There is a National Trust coast path which runs the length of the Durham coastline and includes Seaham, which is famous for its sea glass.  The beach at Easington, your nearest beach, is an excellent place to collect sea glass.  On a clear day there are views from Easington village green all along the coast to Whitby in North Yorkshire.  The next door village is Easington Colliery, where the film Billy Elliot was shot.  The cottages are well positioned between Durham, Sunderland and Hartlepool, all of which are about 15 mins drive.  Newcastle and the Metrocentre are a 30 minute drive.  You can reach North Yorkshire or the Northumberland coast in an hour, and the Lake District National Park in two hours.

Further Details
Tithe Barn Cottages are grade II listed and have been in the owners’ family, on and off, for over 80 years.  It’s believed that the main building might have originally been a place of worship during Norman times whilst a church was being built nearby.  Tithe Barn Cottages has also been a retreat for monks, and was once used to collect tithes (taxes payable to the church), and had close links with the church and Durham cathedral.  In more recent times it was incorporated into a colliery farm and the building was split in three, as it is today - the farmhouse, the Byre and the Hayloft.  The current owners bought it in early 2016 and put a huge amount of work in to convert it into three charming holiday lets.
