Simple, charming and bursting with old-style Greek character, Swallows’ Nest is a tiny little village house walking distance to the beach on the Ionian island of Kefalonia where you can enjoy seclusion, sea views and a much-needed dose of romance and escapism.
If you’re looking for an authentic, stylish and unique bolthole just for two then Swallows’ Nest (or Helidonofolia as it is affectionately called by the locals) is just what you need. The inside is lovingly furnished with vintage pieces, colourful textiles and handmade ceramics, outside there are two small terraces where you can sip a cold drink and watch the world go by and the setting is perfect, with olive trees all around, sea views to the front and mountains at the back. Just like the birds after which it is named, you will want to come back again and again.
Behind the house is Mount Aenos, the highest peak of Kefalonia, and to the front you can watch the sun setting over Lourdas Bay. The central square of Lourdas village, where you will find a shop and several tavernas, is just a short stroll away, and the nearest beach is about a 20 minute walk down the hill.
Kefalonia has its own airport Keffalinia (EFL) with direct charter flights during the season (March to November) from many UK and European airports. There are also ferry services to and from the mainland and to Italy via Patras on the mainland, from the Kefalonian ports of Poros, Sami and Fiscardo.

The house has one air conditioned double bedroom with a brass bedstead, a living room with a cast iron wood burner, CD player / radio and original art on the walls, a blue-tiled bathroom with bath and up to date fittings and a basic but well-equipped kitchenette with an extendable dining table. Radiators and electric fans keep the house cool in summer and cosy in winter and there is air conditioning in the bedroom. There is a good selection of books, maps and travel guides. Maid service available. Free wifi throughout.
At the front there is a sunny terrace which looks towards the sea and at the back there is a shady terrace with a pergola, a built-in bench wall bench and a BBQ. Outdoor furniture includes blue metal tavern tables, traditional Greek wooden dining chairs, deck chairs, sun umbrellas and outdoor cushions. There is no formal garden but next to the house there is a private olive grove with a scented herb bed as well as olive, pomegranate and rosemary trees.
