Comfortable huts with gloriously rustic interiors overlooking a hippo-filled river in Tanzania with easy access to a vast and untamed game reserve and friendly personal service. This unique camp is the perfect base for an authentic and affordable safari.
If you’re looking for a safari holiday with a difference then the Selous River Safari Camp could be just the place to find it. The accommodation, in either en-suite “mudhuts” or simple canvas tents, is traditional yet well-appointed, the setting on the banks of the Rufiji River is wonderful and activities like game drives and boat safaris can all be organised for you by the welcoming and experienced on-site team. This really is a magical destination for discerning travellers who want an unforgettable experience.
The camp is situated just outside the border of the game reserve and there are abundant activities available. Game drives are the quintessential African adventure and offer you a chance to see a huge variety of wildlife, or you could opt for an educational walking safari or a relaxing boat safari. The river and lakes are excellent for fishing, or the camp staff can take you on a cultural visit to Mloka village where you will meet local artists, tailors, shopkeepers and children.
Several airlines fly to the Selous and it’s about a 45 minute flight from Dar es Salaam to the local airstrip (from where you will be collected). Alternatively, the drive from Dar es Salaam takes about 6 hours or there is a bus service to Mloka village but it is not the most reliable or comfortable option.

The camp comprises nine rooms and four tents so there is something to suit every taste and budget. The mudhuts are traditionally crafted and are kitted out with rustic furniture, four poster beds and en-suite bathrooms with flushing toilets and hot water showers. Solar power provides lighting and there are fans to keep you cool at night. Each tent has two single beds and a table and chairs, and shared bathrooms are just a short walk away.
All the mudhuts are located along the river bank with glorious views over the water and its inhabitants. The tents are located in a woodland campsite just a little way back from the river. Meals prepared from fresh local produce are served in a thatched open-plan dining area.
Conditions of Rental
Standard rates include full board catering but additional packages are on offer. Children under 14 must be accompanied in the tents and please be aware that the tents do get visited by wildlife and are quite warm during the hottest part of the year (October-February).
