General Info

Deep into isolation beyond a network of red earth roads, in a lush field bordered by thick forest and running streams, you will find Dehigaha Ela. Wild and rustic yet cushioned with home comforts, this is a special place where you can hike, bike and bird watch, or simply

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Here at Dehigaha Ela the forested hill, the wooded stream and the open grassland attract a huge number and diversity of birds and our staff are trained to help you identify birds, butterflies and trees and guide you along the nature trails. If you’re lucky you might also see elephants, sambhur, deer and other small mammals as they wander by. If you want to really explore your surroundings, from rocky outcrops and hidden streams to village farm lands, walking is definitely the best way. You can also cycle along the red earth roads, stopping to take photos and talk to locals, and a particularly lovely ride is to Kaludiya Pokuna and Kandalama Lake. If you’re feeling adventurous you could pack a picnic and hike all the way up the stream to where it meets the Kiri Oya. Excursions to Minneriya National Park (1 hour) and Kaudulla and Hurulu Wawe National Parks (1.5 hours) are possible, as are trips to nearby ancient archaeological reserves, rocks and caves.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
Damba Tree House has a large double platform supported by the main branches of the tree. The upper platform sleeps 3 adults and you can sit on the lower platform and look out to the distant Nuwaragala Mountains. A modern open plan toilet with hot shower has been built at the base of the tree. Kon Tree House is the smaller and more basic lodge. There is a sleeping area high up on the Kon Tree and at ground level there is a triple bedroom as well as a modern toilet and shower facilities (no hot water). Boulder Cottage 1 was built incorporating two huge granite boulders embedded in the forest slope. The upper floor can accommodate 3 adults, and the toilet is built into the side of the boulder. A flat granite slab acts as the mezzanine floor and at ground level we have designed a living area. Boulder Cottage 2 has red brick steps leading up between the boulders to the upper deck, a lower living area and a shower/toilet set into the hillside.

Exterior Details
On the far side of a small lake are the living and dining huts, where our cook will prepare a wide variety of Sri Lankan as well as western dishes. There is also a BBQ area and areas to 'hang out'.

Further Details
Staff on site includes a manager/naturalist, a house-keeper, a guide and a cook. Tea, coffee and drinking water is provided free of charge and we can pack you a picnic if you want to spend the day off exploring. Solar energy supplies satisfies all electricity needs at the retreat and low lighting is used throughout to conserve energy and minimise the impact on the environment.
