Stylish suites, verdant gardens, sun-drenched terraces, a sparkling swimming pool, lazy breakfasts and utter tranquillity - you can expect all of this and more at the unforgettable Monte da Fornalha in Portugal`s Alentejo region.
If your idea of the perfect holiday involves waking up to the quiet sounds of rural life, ambling through the gardens to the swimming pool and occasionally wandering out to explore hills and vineyards then Monte da Fornalha will be nothing short of paradise. The bedroom suites, tucked away in the extensive grounds, are chic and cool, the gardens are full of both sunny and shady spots where you can read, play games and siesta, and all around you is the unspoilt countryside of Alentejo - home to marble towns, eucalyptus forests, pretty villages and gentle outdoor pursuits like horse riding. This is a truly idyllic place that you will not want to leave.
The lively town of Borba, known for its wine and antiques shops, is just a 5 minute drive away and all the delightful towns of the Alentejo region are on your doorstep - Alandroal, Terena, Reguengos and Monsaraz to name a few. The world heritage site of Roman Evora (50km away) is a must, as is the elegant town of Estremoz. Or you could borrow bikes and head into the forests, savour the produce of local vineyards, horse ride through the hills, or head to Alqueva, a man-made lake where you can canoe, sail and swim. Day trips to Spain (Seville, Trujillo and Merida) are easily manageable, if you can tear yourself away from the pool.
The property sits between the town of Borba and the city of Estremoz, with Lisbon airport 167km away.
The six suites (converted from workers’ cottages) are spacious and sophisticated, with slate floors, whitewashed walls, crisp linen and romantic lighting. Rooms come with bathrooms (most with bathtubs), mini fridges, kettles, toiletries and towelling robes, and three of them have air-con, although the others remain cool nonetheless. If you've booked on a B&B basis, then breakfast, which consists of fresh fruit, cereals, cheese and ham platters, freshly-squeezed orange juice and homemade cake, is served in a charming open-plan sitting/dining room in the main house.
One of the suites has a private balcony and the others have seating on a communal terrace. And the 4 acre garden is full of corners to explore, from the plant-filled courtyard to the gorgeous swimming pool surrounded by loungers and terraces.
