One of a pair of charming properties on a former 19th century Cognac domaine in the picturesque Charente Maritime region of SW France. Offering total privacy and tranquillity, this traditional stone Charentais house with three bedrooms and a delightful walled courtyard complete with ancient pigeonnier, is set among peaceful vineyards and fields of sunflowers with large grounds and a heated swimming pool. Just 5 minutes from the nearest town and within easy reach of the Atlantic beaches.
The extensive gardens are a feature of La Rose des Vents and the two properties are separately and discretely located within the 2.5 acres of gated grounds. The English owners live on site in the Manor House. Spacious accommodation, combining a mix of English and French country style provides a comfortable and luxurious stay with high quality furnishings and linens, ensuite shower rooms and include good WiFi. Relax in flower filled walled gardens equipped for outdoor dining and the heated swimming pool (for sole use of guests) set within the fruit orchard overlooking the vineyards. The resident owners have owned classic sports cars for over 25 years, and included in your stay is a complimentary tour through the vineyards in a 4 seater Morgan sports car.
Choose from a self catering holiday or a B & B mini break which includes breakfast delivered to your cottage each morning, with tea and cakes on arrival and a welcome 4 course dinner served in the Manor House. Or, why not start your self catering holiday with a reservation for a candle lit dinner to be served in your cottage or under the stars in your private walled garden. The owners also specialise in organising bespoke classic car tours for small groups of classic car owners and the properties have proved popular with larger family groups who like to holiday together.
The Charente Maritime region has a plethora of attractions both inland and on the coast. The area boasts a microclimate to rival the south of France due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. The town of Matha is just 5 mins away and is a typical small French country market town with good amenities. Cognac is 15 minutes away and well worth a visit to go to the great Cognac houses, take a boat trip or just soak up the sun in one of the many pavement cafes. You are 30 mins from the Roman town of Saintes with its amphitheatre, or 40 mins from Angouleme, famous for the Circuit des Remparts. The Atlantic beaches are 1 hour away - you can visit La Rochelle and Royan, one of France’s leading seaside resorts, famous for its golden beaches and sheltered bays. Or take the toll bridge across to the Ile de Re. Bordeaux is a one hour drive and is an elegant 18th century city with famous theatres and museums.
La Rose des Vents is just over one hour’s drive from La Rochelle and Bordeaux airports. Poitiers airport is a 2 hour drive. If coming by ferry from the UK, the cottage is a 4 hour drive from St Malo. Alternatively you can travel to Angouleme by train using the Eurostar and TGV. Angouleme is 40 mins drive away. Detailed directions provided on booking.

Manor Cottage once the Estate Manager’s house has now been tastefully renovated with sky blue shutters and honey coloured stone. Step inside the entrance hall to find a home full of original features including terracotta & waxed wooden floors and high beamed ceilings. There is an open fireplace with an antique woodburner in the spacious living/dining room where double doors open onto the private courtyard. Comfortably furnished, there are well stocked bookcases, glossy magazines and indoor board games, as well as WiFi, SKY TV, DVD player and music system. The fully equipped kitchen includes a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer and opens onto a private terrace ideal for a relaxing breakfast. There is a family bathroom on the ground floor. The property sleeps 6 in two double bedrooms, each with ensuite shower rooms and a twin bedroom. On the first floor they all have views over the gardens. To ensure a relaxing stay, quality beds are made up for your arrival with Egyptian cotton sheets and provencal throws. All three bathrooms have heated towel rails, and are stocked with fluffy white towels, pool towels and a hairdryer.
Outside ,there is a secluded terrace with its’ cherry tree and holly hocks, wrought iron furniture and shady parasol – from here, step through the archway into your large private walled courtyard garden. Filled with the scent of honeysuckle and lavender, there are pots full of geraniums and fuschias, a tinkling fountain, and ancient pigeonnier. Shaded by an enormous fig tree it is furnished with table,chairs and parasol, plus a stone BBQ and outdoor candelights so you can dine under the stars. A personal gate from the courtyard leads into the orchard with it’s views over the vineyards and the guests 11 x 5.5 metre heated swimming pool. The pool is alarmed to ensure the safety of younger guests. There is a large grassed area for ball games and badminton, swing ball and boules are available on site,. Bring your own tennis racquet, as guests have access to the tennis courts in the commune free of charge. Undercover parking keeps the cars cool in summer …. and guests are invited to enjoy the herbs, apples, pears, plums., damsons, cherries, apricots and figs growing in the gardens and orchard.
Although located in a peaceful hamlet surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields, a good range of shops and supermarkets are located just 5 minutes drive in the market town of Matha, the larger town of Cognac is a 15 minutes drive. The local bread van delivers to your door each morning, you can visit a market every day of the week in one of the many nearby towns and villages and sample the local cuisine in a range of restaurants from open air cafes to gourmet restaurants within 5 - 15 minutes drive. An information folder in Manor Cottage, is brimming with ideas for all the family of where to go, Cognac & Wine tastings , restaurants to try, opening times etc.
Conditions of Rental
Pool heating, bed linen & towels and WiFi all included in the price. Cots, high chairs and stairgates are also provided at no extra charge (guests are asked to bring their own cot linen). You can pre order a 3 or 4 course welcome dinner with wine to be served in your cottage on arrival at extra cost. A complimentary tour of the local area and vineyards in a 4 seater Morgan sports car is included. Mid stay maid service is available at extra cost. 25% deposit to confirm booking with the balance due 8 weeks before arrival. Payment is possible in Euros or UK sterling. Bikes can be hired locally and delivered to your cottage. 10% reduction for couple only booking a property. Sorry, no pets.
