Situated in a peaceful French hamlet in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Leela is a tranquil and magical spot where you can relax, unwind and explore the wild and beautiful Ariege region.
Over the last decade the house has been sensitively restored using ecological building techniques and materials and it is now a charming hideaway that resonates light, warmth and a beautiful energy. Old wood and natural stone blend with curved stone walls to create a space that is cosy in winter and cool in summer, and around you is the almost untouched Ariege, picturesque, historic and bursting with wildlife and activities. Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or a family holiday with a difference, Leela is just the place.
The property lies between Foix and St Girons in the midst of the Seronais National Park, and there is a huge amount to see and do in the immediate area. Foix itself has a magnificent castle and several museums, St Lizier is a UNESCO site, St Girons hosts one of France’s most colourful vibrant markets, Le Maz d’Azil has an impressive grotto, and Labouiche is home to Europe’s longest underground river trip. Nearby you can walk, cycle, play golf, horse ride and swim in lakes and rivers, or you could visit Castelnau Durban (just 2.7km away) and soak up the traditional French ambience in one of the bars and restaurants. And don’t forget the medieval settlement at Carcassonne, the castle at Montsegur or the ski resorts just 90 minutes away.

Through the arched front door you will find a cosy living room with a wood burning stove at its heart, and from here you can either climb the original wooden stairs to the first floor or continue through to the open plan kitchen/dining area with another wood burning stove and French doors to the garden. Past the dining area there is a well-equipped utility room and kitchen, and on the first floor there is a master bedroom and a second bedroom which can either be a king or a twin. An extra single futon can be added.
The small courtyard garden is surrounded by roses, sweet peas, clematis, lavender and herbs. There is a deck and a BBQ for eating al fresco or you can just lie in the hammock and listen to water trickling into the pond. The master bedroom has a private balcony which overlooks the valley.
Rooftop yoga is available and retreats can be arranged.
