Built as a school around 120 years ago, and last used as such in about 1930, The Old Schoolhouse is a cottage with plenty of character, from an open fire to the large original school room. Come and enjoy the natural tranquillity and rugged beauty that Skye is famous for.
With lovely views over Loch Harport and the Red Cuillins, this is the perfect base from which to explore the wonderful Isle of Skye, one of Scotland’s most unspoilt and picturesque regions. The cottage retains a number of original features which are all part of its authentic charm and history, but it has also been comfortably modernised to provide a cosy, convenient holiday retreat. Curl up with a book in front of a roaring fire, play table tennis and darts with the children, or get out and discover the island’s wonders, from the wild coastline to the craggy mountains. This is a complete escape from the stresses of day to day life.
The cottage is ideally situated for walking, climbing and exploring the rest of Skye and there are hiking and mountaineering possibilities for people of all abilities. Just down the hill is Carbost village with shop, post office, medical centre and the famous Talisker distillery. There is a 9 hole golf course at Sconser, a variety of boat trips on offer and a number of visitor attractions, from Dunvegan Castle and Armadale Castle Gardens to Edinbane Pottery and the Skye Museum of Island Life in Kilmuir. There are eagles and otters, deer and marvellous wild flowers in summer, and galleries, museums and jewellery shops. At the end of a day of fresh air, activity and sightseeing, you can sink into a chair at one of the local hostelries, whether it be the Old Inn at Carbost just a 10 minute walk away, the Kinloch Lodge Hotel or the Three Chimneys restaurant.
From the Skye Bridge take the A87 north towards Portree. After about 25 miles, at Sligachan, turn left on to the A863 signposted Dunvegan. After 5 miles turn left on the B8005 signposted to Carbost and Glenbrittle (among other places). Continue for about 3 miles keeping to the right at all junctions and you will be going down a hill into the village of Carbost. Drive through the village past the shop and the Talisker Distillery (on your left) after which there is a sharp left turn up a steep hill. Continue straight ahead where the road swings right to Portnalong and the cottage is about
The open plan living area has a sitting room at one end with an open fire and comfortable sofas and chairs, and a well-equipped kitchen at the other end. There isn’t a television but there is a good selection of books, puzzles and games to entertain you, as well as a radio/CD player and WiFi coverage, so you won’t feel completely disconnected. The kitchen contains everything you need to cater for 8 people. There are two bedrooms downstairs, one leading off the other, and upstairs is another bedroom with four single beds. The main bathroom has a bath with a shower, a toilet and a basin Through a separate entrance is the old school room, one of the greatest assets of the cottage. It has been equipped with table tennis, darts and other games and toys, as well as old sofas and chairs and a small open fire for when the weather is cold. There is also a shower room and a large drying room.
The bedrooms have modern comfortable mattresses and bedding, and all bedrooms have ample storage and hanging space. The beds will be made up for your arrival and there are lots of spare blankets. All rooms have electric heaters with controllable time clocks and there are storage radiators in the hall and the sitting room. There is an open fire in the sitting room and in the school room and we provide sacks of coal, one free and the rest at cost, a little kindling and a few firelighters to start you off on arrival. The cottage and school room are fully double glazed. We leave washing up liquid, toilet cleaner etc. but don't expect enough for your whole stay. You will also find basics like tea bags, salt and pepper and some herbs, spices etc and it would be good if you could replace these if you finish them.
