Hidden high and deep within the green forests of the central Portuguese mountains, O Homem Verde is a charming and exclusive retreat for those who appreciate the joys of nature and a simple existence. Welcome to a private paradise.
Whether you’re an adventurer looking for something a bit different or just someone who wants to enjoy the unpretentious pleasures of sustainable living then O Homem Verde (The Green Man) is the place for you. The yurts and B&B room are set within a verdant forest, surrounded by wildlife and waterfalls, and although the facilities are eco-friendly and functional they are also comfortable and fun. The result is a calming, playful and welcoming place where children and adults alike have the time and space to enjoy the simple things in life and reconnect with each other. It’s truly magical.
The site is situated in Beira Litoral, a mountain region in Central Portugal. The nearest village, Espinhal, is 7km away and provides shops, restaurants, cafes, a bank, a chemist, a post office and a market on Sundays, and if you want to find culture further afield you could take a day trip to the old university town of Coimbra (35km) or to the historic sites of Tomar and the Monastery of Batalha. There are plenty of opportunities for adventure in the area from walking and mountain biking to kayaking and rock climbing or you could go at a gentler pace and spend your days discovering river beaches, waterfalls, natural swimming pools and picnic spots. Wildlife lovers will be in heaven and the surrounding hills are full of wild boar, deer, eagles, butterflies and lizards, or you could venture to one of the Schist Villages to find a restaurant with a view.
The site is south of Coimbra, near the town of Penela and the village of Espinhal. It is about a 2 hour drive from both Porto and Lisbon airports and buses/trains connect Coimbra with these cities but you will need to own transport to get here.

The two yurts are traditional Mongolian nomadic tents with canvas walls and circular roofs. They have been decorated in a woodland chic style and inside you will find a double bed, an additional sofa bed, a table and chairs, a refrigerator, storage space, a stove and lighting/electricity. There is also a beautiful attic room with its own bathroom which is available for B&B (no minimum stay). Facilities are shared between the tents and comprise compost toilets and safari-style showers.
Outside the yurts there are covered wooden decks where you will find a table and chairs, a gas stove, a selection of kitchen utensils and a hammock. The decks are on the edge of a south-facing terrace that overlooks the woodland below.
The owners are very happy to accommodate honeymooners or small groups, and they can also offer holistic therapies and massage treatments.
Conditions of Rental
During low season the minimum stay in the yurts is 2 nights and during high season it is 4 nights. Continental breakfast can be provided for 4 euros per person.
