From 14th March 2019 to 31st March 2019
Beat Brexit and come and join us in France! 20% off all rates during July and August if you book before the end of March. We'd love to see you in the glorious Dordogne.
A spectacular former paper mill on its own private island in the Couze valley in the Dordogne, recently renovated and stylishly transformed into a luxury 6 bedroom holiday retreat. It is surrounded by rivers and forests and is set in an idyllic corner of rural France.
Originally a paper mill, then a trout farm and a working farm, parts of Fontalbe date back to the early 17th century. Its recent renovation has been careful to retain its quirky, original features, whilst creating the very best in modern living with clean lines and luxurious furnishings. Only 25 minutes away from Bergerac Airport, Fontalbe is within a five-minute drive of villages where you will find restaurants, bars and bustling markets. Here you are in the heart of the Dordogne, one of the most beautiful regions of France.
If you can drag yourself away from the private pool then you’ll find lots to explore in the surrounding area. Horse riding, golf, cycling, walking and canoeing on the beautiful Dordogne river. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the best food and wine in France and it’s easy to while away a morning wandering around the bustling village markets picking up the local delicacies. Beaumont du Perigord, 5 mins drive from the house, has two bars, a bistro and a pizzeria and there are lots of other local restaurants and bars for you to enjoy. There are prehistoric caves and in Saint Avit Senieur and Cadouin there are medieval, UNESCO listed Abbeys. Within a twenty minute drive, you will find a plethora of beautiful villages where you can dine and drink with the locals. We can arrange visits to local vineyards for you and your party, as well as private wine tastings. There are the world famous vineyards at Saint Emillion and Bordeaux within an hour and a half.
Bergerac airport is 25 minutes away and is easily reached from most parts of the UK. Unless you drive here we strongly recommend that you hire your own car. There are several car rental companies at Bergerac airport.

The main house has six large en suite bedrooms (one with a designer bathtub for that extra bit of luxury). All the bedrooms can be made into either twin or super king beds and have Egyptian cottage linen and fluffy towels. The views from the bedroom windows look out over the surrounding forests, garden and pool. The bathrooms all have large, walk-in showers and heated towel rails. The living space is large and airy with original beams. The modern well stocked kitchen retains the original terracotta tiles. There is a separate one bedroom apartment at one end of the main house which you can also rent, with a large en suite bedroom and cosy living space and kitchen. The apartment has a separate entrance and a private terrace overlooking the river. Wifi throughout. Travel cots and blow up beds available for younger children.
There is a covered outdoor dining area overlooking the small river at the side of the house - cool and shady by day, and wonderful stargazing by night. The table is big enough to seat the whole group and there is a sink, fridge and large gas BBQ out here too. The private heated pool is 12m x 6m. There are stylish sunbeds and large umbrellas, deckchairs and hammocks to relax in. And for the more lively ones, some inflatable pool toys, boules, swingball and table tennis.
There is no additional charge for cleaning at the end of your stay. We do ask, though, that you leave the house clean and tidy. You can access Fontalbe from 4 pm on the day of your arrival and we ask that you leave by 10 am on the day of your departure. No pets are allowed. There is no smoking inside the house. We provide a comprehensive welcome pack, including bread, cheese, water and, of course, wine and beer. Children are welcome but please bear in mind that we are surrounded by forests and rivers. Kitchen basics are supplied, as well as an ‘honesty bar’ with supplies of local red and white wine. We can arrange for a private chef to cook for you. We can also arrange for private wine tastings in the comfort of your own home. The apartment is available to book on its own during low season.
