This property was originally a shooting lodge at the turn of the last century and now serves as the ideal secluded holiday destination for those seeking the peace and tranquillity of a short break in the country.

General Info

Conveniently located near all the wonderful attractions of the area and only a couple of miles from the unspoilt beaches of the nearby Jurassic coast, Axen Lodge is nonetheless a secluded location where guests can escape from the crowds. Its location is such that visitors to the place will feel as if the surrounding land is their very own garden for the duration of their stay. Guests won’t need to leave the property to enjoy their holiday as Axen Lodge has many great features. A hot tub and barbecue help make a for a fantastic summer holiday at this place and there is a trampoline in the garden to keep any children (and big children!) occupied. The house sleeps up to eight people, is dog-friendly, and equipped with Wi-Fi.

All the same, there’s plenty to enjoy when leaving the property as Symondsbury Estate lies close to Dorset’s Jurassic Coastline with its amazing beaches as well as the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. It only takes a few miles of walking along the spectacular coastal and country paths to visit these places and enjoy them for the day. There’s plenty of activities on the historic Symondsbury Estate itself and there are plenty of good walks in this coastal location with the best natural scenery a holiday can offer.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Axen Lodge lies close to Symondsbury Estate who own and manage the property. Set amongst pasture and ancient woodland in rural Dorset, Symondsbury Estate is within walking distance of beautiful, untouched beaches. Symondsbury Estate has been owned by the Colfox family for over a hundred years and has buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. It’s near to the Jurassic coast and to so many amazing beaches that you will be spoilt for choice. A short, half hour walk takes visitors to the top of Colmer hill to see the absolutely stunning panoramic view of the sea and rolling hills of the Dorset countryside. There are sometimes buzzards to be spotted overhead and it’s a fantastic place to feel on top of the world for a moment. There are plenty of other routes and historic paths over the estate and bicycles can be hired for this purpose.

An animal viewing area contains many farmyard friends to charm all visitors: Black pigs, Pygmy goats and the ever-friendly Minty the sheep are a delight to children as well as their parents. Symondsbury Estate’s garden provides fresh, organic produce for the Symondsbury Kitchen all the year round and some of these delicious jams, marmalades, cheeses, beers, and gins can be purchased by guests. Horse & Carriage rides are available for a leisurely tour of the area and for the more adventurous there are even survival courses on offer which teach key survival skills delivered by experienced and knowledgeable trainers. One-day taster courses on offer for the bold and four-day courses for the even bolder!

Guests can make a short trip to the village of Bridport which is only a few minutes’ drive away and find several restaurants as well as a vintage market and a museum. There’s a Waitrose in Bridport for any last-minute home comforts, but you’re likely to have everything you could possibly want for your holiday on Symondsbury Estate itself.

The bright and beautiful interiors of the house feel much more spacious than you’d expect from the outside and the house has been elegantly decorated in light colours. The sitting room has plenty of cosy, comfortable seating for all the guests, a TV, and a log burner fire to keep everyone warm. A little ‘snug room’ and study with a desk, sofa, and TV provides a lovely retreat within a retreat and the house has Wi-Fi. The absolute best thing about this property though is the views you can see from the windows. The incredible views of the countryside that stretch for miles will make guests feel as if it is all theirs to explore and enjoy.
