Set in secluded woodland beside a gently flowing waterfall, Mill Cottage is an immaculately restored cottage on the banks of the River Wye near Hay on Wye in Wales. This is a cosy, luxurious and romantic rural bolthole made just for two. Inside, traditional features like the large fireplace, exposed stonework and oak flooring blend seamlessly with every modern convenience and indulgence. Outside, perry pear orchards, hedgerows and oak woodland overlook the River Wye, Hay and the famous Black Mountains beyond. Whether you're here for romance, nature or outdoor pursuits Mill Cottage will provide a truly unique and memorable holiday.
The cottage is situated on the Cabalva Estate, a family-run sheep and beef farm within a beautiful tranquil setting - their pasture-fed Aberdeen Angus beef is sold to some of the UK's top restaurants. Guests are welcome to buy some of the beef and have a tour of the farm. There is a potting studio on the estate where you can have pottery lessons. Also on site you can do private fly fishing on the Wye, the estate has a ghillie who can offer lessons 1:1 or in a small group. If you're interested in Forest Bathing, then just ask for more information about the courses on offer - it's a wonderful, immersive, forest experience.
The countryside around here is nothing short of breath-taking and there is much to explore. The fields and woodland around the cottage are full of wildlife, from sheep and hares to woodcock, hedgehogs, robins and red kites, or you could head down to famous Offa's Dyke and walk up into the hills or down to the river. The famous book town of Hay-on-Wye is just 3 miles away, and in the area you can also go cycling, riding, canoeing and fishing. And if you don’t want to self-cater there are lots of excellent places to eat and drink – try The Tram at Eardisley, The Stagg at Titley or Tomatitos in Hay-on-Wye itself. There is a potting studio on the estate where you can have pottery classes. You can take part in some forest bathing (originally a Japanese concept, it involves mindful and therapeutic time in a forest setting), or for something more active, sign up for fishing lessons with a private ghillie.
The cottage is easy to reach from the M5 motorway. Please see the website for detailed driving directions.
