Located on the west coast of South Harris, surrounded by breath-taking Scottish scenery and some of the most spectacular beaches the world has to offer is àilean, a spacious and luxurious house where you can relax and get away from it all.
Designed by the owners as their home in the Isle of Harris àilean is the perfect location for a break in the Outer Hebrides. Situated in the heart of the amazing beaches and just a 375 yard stroll from the sand at Traigh Mhor this fantastic and individual house cocoons you in comfort with underfloor heating and lots of big windows to enjoy the breath-taking scenery. Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat, a relaxed break with family or friends, or a holiday full of activity and culture, the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides is a very special destination. àilean is a beautiful house full of light and space with lots of great features. The living area is open plan with lots of glass so it almost feels like you are outside and you can really enjoy the view from beside the wood burning stove. There are 3 large bedrooms (2 with ensuite shower rooms) as well as a huge bathroom, open plan living area and separate utility room. You have private use of the whole property, big garden, lots of parking and outside storage.
Harris is a fantastic place to just relax and enjoy the scenery, but there is also a lot to do. If you want to take things gently, stroll along the beautiful beaches, potter amongst the rock pools and watch otters, seals, porpoises and other marine life as well as a huge array of bird life (eagles can often be spotted from the house). Alternatively, the exceptional Isle of Harris golf course is a few minutes from the house, the island boasts some excellent fishing, and there are many trails to walk and hills to climb. Hire a bike, go surfing and kayaking, fly a kite, or take a boat trip around the coast or to one of the other islands. Soak up the history with a visit to ancient monuments like the ruined chapel on the south side of Chaipaval, MacLeod’s Stone or Rodel Church, marvel at the powerful and evocative standing stones at Callanish, or explore the ruins of Carloway Broch or the remains of the Dun in the croft land behind the house. Harris is also an absolute dream for photographers, artists and talented people of all kinds so there are plenty of opportunities to search out art, crafts and the world famous Harris Tweed or visit the Distillery for a tour. The opportunities are endless and you’ll be able to find your own special experiences.
The house is located at Borve on the West coast of South Harris. Borve is a small ribbon settlement about 25 minutes drive south on the A859 from Tarbert (13 miles or so). The car journey to Stornoway takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. Direct ferries to the Isle of Harris are provided by Caledonian MacBrayne services, from Uig in Skye to Tarbert. It’s also possible to sail across the Sound of Harris from the Uists and from Ullapool to Stornoway in Lewis. There are regular flights to Stornoway airport from various UK airports.

With three large bedrooms, the house sleeps up to 6 people in comfort. On the ground floor the main living area is open-plan and there is a king size bedroom and a large bathroom with a double ended bath and separate shower. The kitchen is well equipped and stocked and there is a separate utility room with washing a drying facilities. Upstairs there are large king size and twin bedrooms, both with en-suite shower rooms, as well as a quiet area should you seek a bit of peace and quiet! The house is fitted with under floor heating throughout, it boasts a four person Heatwave Infrared sauna, and there is a Morso stove in living room to keep you cosy. Your home entertainment needs are catered for by a flat screen TV and freesat, DVD player,
stereo with Bluetooth compatibility, fibre broadband and a selection of books, DVDs, CDs, and games.
Large windows at the front of the house frame panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the North Harris hills, the island of Taransay, and Ceapabhal with its distinctive feldspar stripe. Crofting lands behind the house lead to the gentler hills of South Harris, which are peppered with small lochs and the remains of Duns and shielings. Borve beach is just a few hundred yards walk from the door, indeed all the amazing beaches of South Harris are close by. Harris golf course is a mile to the south and superb fishing is also available nearby.
Enjoy your stay without worrying about having to bring basic necessities – rental includes: towels and bedding, dishtowels, dishcloth, kitchen roll and toilet roll, hair dryers, hand wash and washing up liquid/dishwasher tablets, washing powder and fabric softener, cleaning materials, electricity and fuel for the stove, a beach rug and windbreak, beach towels and picnic items, and herbs, vegetable and olive oil, flour, basic condiments, tea, coffee, sugar, foil, cling film and parchment. We also provide a small set of golf clubs or you can borrow some at the clubhouse (no play on Sunday). Remember that shops in Harris are not open on Sundays.
Conditions of Rental
Weekly lets run from Friday to Friday. £25 charge for a dog. £200 refundable good housekeeping deposit for all bookings.
