To really absorb Bali's cultural heritage, a visit to the island's cultural epicentre of Ubud is a must. From here different strands resonate outwards in filds as diverse as as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Additionally, Balinese percussion orchestra music (gamelan), is highly developed and varied. Balinese dances portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana - famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, and kecak (the monkey dance). Even taking culture to one side, visitors to Bali can venture from their self-catering villa in Bali to some of the finest beaches in the region - or perhaps even hire a four wheel drive vehicle and travel inland to see the famed rice terraces, ancient temples and spectacular festivals that will make their visit so memorable. One thing is certain though - wherever you have been during the day, your return home to the villa in Bali each evening will enable you to reflect at leisure on what you have seen. Chances are that it will have been pretty special...
