A luxurious art deco style villa built as close to the sea as you can get on Sal, Cabo Verde. Built on volcanic rock at the water's edge, the converted former dive centre has panoramic sea views across the entire front and sides of the property. A communal swimming pool is a stone's throw away. Chosen as one of The Guardians Top 100 Beach Houses around the World in January 2014.
Situated in the verdant and well established Murdeira village, the villa was converted seven years ago and is upgraded each year. The villa is elegantly furnished. All rooms have air-conditioning but with the glass doors permanently open and shutters in place, air is free to gently cool all rooms. Murdeira has a beach side bar and restaurant, and a small shop selling all the basics. The village has an emergency generator thus avoiding any problems with power cuts. It is a gated community but the island of Sal has a low crime rate. Sal is a kite surfing and windsurfing mecca with excellent scuba diving sites. The World Professional Wind Surfing Championships have been held at Ponta Preta, five minutes from here.
We are conveniently situated mid-way up the island, a 10-minute taxi ride from both Espargos - the main town - and Santa Maria, with its many restaurants, bars and shops selling African artifacts. The airport is about six minutes away. Taxis are not expensive - approximately €7 depending on your negotiating skills! The local form of transport -alugers (mini-buses) cost €1 to both destinations. Car hire can be arranged. There are several tiny sand-filled sheltered bays in between the rocks within a minute or twos walk of the property where you can swim and snorkel. There is also a sandy bay around the edge of the harbour. Other days you may prefer to visit Santa Maria with its long white sandy beaches. The salinas - salt baths - at Pedra de Lume are a really lovely excursion and a visit to the magical Blue Eye is a must. Cape Verde is a Mecca for both wind and kite surfing.
Changeover days are flexible as flights come in from all over Europe throughout the week. UK Flights from Birmingham , Gatwick and Bristol are also across the week. There are daily flights from Portugal with TAP and flights twice a week from Gran Canaria with Binter Air.

There are three large bedrooms (two super king size, one twin) with built-in wardrobes. Each bedroom has a bathroom with double basins and walk-in showers. One mosaic-lined shower can be plugged to form a bath for children. Air Con, television and DVD player, iPod dock and wall speakers, Internet access (provided through the use of a dongle), washing machine, dishwasher, large fridge and freezer, plus drinks fridge, and built-in water filter - no need for endless plastic bottles! There is a small mixer and a bread maker in the well-stocked kitchen. Bedroom 1 has its own fridge and kettle. Bed linen, towels and beach towels provided. There are blankets available in all rooms in the totally unlikely event that you might need them! There are fans in each of the main bedrooms. Bedroom 3 is always cooled by the wind through the shutters on that side of the villa. There is a garden store with beach chairs, small sun umbrellas, buckets and spades. WiFi available.
There are two sets of sun beds in different areas of the roof terrace with cushions and parasols so you can enjoy the fantastic views from all vantage points. Every evening as you sip your sundowners you get a breathtaking vista as the sun sets behind Mont Leon on the opposite side of the bay. There is also a small table and chairs, again with a parasol. Also on the roof is a large shaded sun pavilion with three rattan sofas, side tables and a coffee table. The old dive centre is adjacent to a beautiful 30 metre saline pool that is usually deserted. There are also two pools for children. One is paddling pool depth and the other is a training pool. These are rarely busy. There is a garden, and ground floor terrace with large shaded table for ten and a BBQ.
Humpback whales visit this bay through the winter months during their mating season and during the summer months you can see pilot whales and dolphins. Loggerhead turtles use Sal as their nesting site and their preservation is taken very seriously. The whole island is a kite and windsurfing mecca, diving, deep sea fishing, whale watching, mountain biking. The owners representative who speaks English, German, French and Portuguese/Creole can arrange all these activities for you. There are several well stocked Italian delis, and small supermarkets in both Santa Maria and Espargos.
Conditions of Rental
€250 deposit and balance 8 weeks in advance. €350 returnable deposit against metered electricity and water usage and damage and breakages. House and beach towels, all linen, kitchen cloths and so on are provided. No smoking inside the house. Maid service: once a week or more upon request. Although we have rarely been affected by noise, we are within 100 metres of the pool bar and the totally enclosed air-conditioned restaurant. Both have to close before 11pm and since it is a private estate few outsiders ever use the facilities. The estate has security but Sal is a very safe place.
