One-Off Feature

Chole Mjini is a multiple award winning jungle-island fantasy getaway, tucked away amongst ruins on Chole Island, situated in the middle of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania. Chole Mjini has 6 tree houses and 1 ground house, with either one or two stories, all with views of the sea surrounding the island. The houses have large “throne-like” beds, a hammock, relaxation area with a bench or couch and open-air showers. Each day begins with a birdsong serenade at dawn and ends with the excited chattering of squabbling fruit bats at sunset. Chole Mjini is perfect for young and old, singles, couples and families who appreciate that nature is the ultimate luxury and want to reawaken their senses.

General Info

Part of the virtually unknown Mafia archipelago that lies south of Zanzibar, Chole is a tiny tropical island located in the largest marine park in East Africa. And on it you will find seven wonderful treehouses, all carefully placed so that privacy is assured. Here there are no roads, no cars, no electricity. Instead you will find star-spangled skies, flickering candles, superb food and the timeless luxuries of space, privacy and peace. Let your cares melt away as you watch the sun set from the rooftop bar before dining within 19th century ruins, and then fall asleep to the sound of the sea.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

The waters around the island hold some of the most extraordinary and unspoilt reefs in the world and your trip would not be complete without a scuba diving expedition with the experienced lodge owners. But there’s more than just diving on offer here – try snorkelling, go swimming with whale sharks, watch turtles hatch or go sailing at sunset. You could visit Popo Park, the world’s first park for the conservation of fruit bats, stroll around welcoming Chole village, or explore the atmospheric medieval settlement of Kua. Alternatively you could hike through the forest and swim in a hidden saltwater ‘blue lagoon’ or wait for the ‘Funguni’ sand bank to appear (visible for just 6 hours each day and only accessible by boat) and enjoy a sunbathe, a swim and a picnic.

Getting There & Local Amenities

Getting There:
There are regular flights to Mafia from virtually everywhere in Tanzania - flight time from Dar Es Salaam is around 30 minutes (45 minutes from Zanzibar or Selous). The transfer by road and boat to the island will take approximately 30 minutes. Note that entry to the Mafia Marine Park costs US$20 per person/day; you will need to prepay this amount in cash on entering the Park, so have the dollars ready.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
The seven treehouses vary in size and layout but most are built on two levels and all are open to the elements with stunning views of the ocean. The king-size beds act as throne-like centrepieces and every treehouse has its own private bathing area, located below in the house “garden”. Here among the natural vegetation you will find an open-air shower and a closed composting toilet.

Exterior Details
The treehouses are reached by sandy paths that lead through the vegetation and all are close enough to the ocean to be able to see and hear it. If you want to star gaze, sit on the Hanashi bar deck, or chill out at the Red Herring, a bar with 270 degree sea views where you can sip an ice cold drink while watching the sun set on the water.

Further Details
The food here, which guests enjoy on a candle-lit table under the stars, is absolutely delicious. A strong Swahili influence provides delicate yet intense flavourful spicing and there is lots of fresh sea food, local fruit and vegetables and coconut milk.

Conditions of Rental
Our prices include accommodation, food, drinking water, laundry, and daily Chole Bay sailing excursion to sandbank or sunset cruise.
