General Info
Deer Park stands within 20 acres of parkland that is part of Capability Brown’s design for the great park at Scampston Hall. It is a Grade II* listed crenelated, gothic miniature castle with a long and fascinating history – folly and tea house, game keeper’s cottage, army camp and family home. It is now a spacious and very comfortable holiday house, ideal for family get-togethers, where children will find plenty to keep them entertained and adults can relax and enjoy this unique property with its numerous period features. The huge farmhouse kitchen is always cosy with heat from the Aga and there are open fires in the breakfast room and upstairs drawing room and a wood burner in the living room, adding to the ambience of these elegant rooms.

The house is surrounded by an enclosed garden with uninterrupted views over the park to Scampston Hall, a fine stately home with an award-winning walled garden and lovely restaurant. The park is a natural nature reserve and home to a wealth of wildlife, including deer, stoats and numerous species of birds. Rillington village is close by and has a useful selection of amenities including a general store, butchers, two pubs and a fish and chip shop. The gentle undulating chalk uplands of the Yorkshire Wolds, which inspired the famous Hockney paintings, is perfect for walking and cycling and visitors can enjoy a scenic trip through the North Yorkshire Moors aboard the renowned steam train which travels from Pickering (12 miles) to the fishing port of Whitby.

Local attractions include Castle Howard, Wolds Way Lavender and Sledmere House, and family fun can be found at Flamingo Land. There are an abundance of quaint market towns and pretty villages in this area and a good choice of traditional inns and fine-dining restaurants. A short drive leads to the ancient walled city of York, steeped in history and brimming with attractions which appeal to all ages and easily accessible are the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.
Accommodation Details
Enjoy a stay at this unique gothic miniature castle exuding character and history, set amidst parkland designed by Capability Brown

“My home is my castle.”

Bounded by 20 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown, this gothic miniature castle has served many a purpose throughout the years. Former folly and tea house, gamekeeper’s cottage and family home, army camp and now historic holiday home, Deer Park is invariably imbued with a rich sense of history.

You are met with a dazzling welcome upon arrival – arched windows and crenelated walls tower above the surrounding pastureland, that’s studded with mature oak trees and scots pines. The drawing room is beautifully in keeping with the period of the building, with cream walls, high ceiling, soft drapes and comfortable furnishings all set around a large open fire.

Elegance is another key aspect that runs freely through the property particularly in the dining room, with its dark wooden table, chairs and picture windows looking out over the garden. In conflict with the formal dining and drawing rooms, the sociable L-shaped layout of the farmhouse kitchen/diner makes for a much more relaxed environment in which to breakfast. The kitchen is well-equipped with an Aga, which turns the chore of cooking into an absolute delight, and the flowery fabrics and country décor give the living room a timeless charm.

For the discerning bibliophile, there’s a library of books around the house to peruse at your leisure, and outside, you will fall in love with the garden during the spring. Sitting out on park benches, you can watch the kids dance around the lawn as the garden blossoms with wildflower, and beyond are the landscaped grounds of the stately home Scampston Hall; a fine example of Lancelot Capability Brown’s artistic flair.
