Gorgeous September and October sees the grape and olive harvests coming in - while the days are warm enough to use the pool. £200 off per week (making it £900, rather than £1100pw), or £30 off the day rate of £160 (making it £130 per night; 4 nights min).
Casa Poggio is a serene four bedroom stone farmhouse set in an olive grove in the Sabine Hills, just 45 minutes from the city of Rome in Italy. Set in five acres and with exquisite views, this is a heavenly location with stylish interiors, a pretty garden, and a glorious swimming pool.
Set on the prow of a hill, the farmhouse has exceptional 360 degree views – from the far-off dome of St Peter’s in Rome, to the nearby Sabine mountains and the blue hills of Umbria to the north. Sabine is Italy’s ancient olive heartland, a tranquil spot where you can sit back and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There are eight hilltop towns visible from the house, all within 30 mins drive, so you won’t be short of places to visit – if you can tear yourself away from this idyllic retreat. The closest of these towns is Poggio Mirteto (5 mins), with excellent food shops and a Friday market.
If you can drag yourself away from Casa Poggio there’s masses to see and do in the surrounding area. Rome is an easy 45 minute train ride from Poggio Mirteto station. There are lots of other places to visit within a one hour drive. Bomarzo is a lush park with volcanic rock sculptures. Viterbo is a walled Renaissance town with good shops and restaurants. Just outside Viterbo you’ll find the Terme dei Papi spa, or you can visit the Cascata delle Marmore, one of Europe’s most impressive waterfalls. A little further afield (but still under 2 hours drive) you’ll find Orvieto, Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia, and the lovely hilltop towns of Narni, Spello and Todi. Visit Roman towns, ornate gardens and Etruscan tombs. Or head to Lake Bracciano or Lake Martignano with their beaches, watersports and restaurants.
Nearest airports are Rome Fiumicino or Rome Ciampino, from which you will hire a car and follow the ring-road north to the A1 Florence-Naples motorway. The first motorway exit brings you into the Sabine Hills. The 40-mile journey takes around an hour and a quarter. You can also fly to Perugia: a longer journey (70 miles) but scenic, following the Tiber past the medieval hilltop town of Todi. Late arrivals can catch a train direct from Rome Fiumicino to Poggio Mirteto (90 mins). You’ll need picking up as there are no taxis at the station.

2 minute walk to a farm shop
Casa Poggio is built into the hillside, so you enter at upper ground floor level. The farmhouse has thick stone walls, chestnut beams, terracotta floors, and whitewashed walls. The large open plan kitchen diner is superbly equipped for the most serious of cooks. There is a dishwasher and washing machine. The living room has French windows which look out to Monte Soratte, comfortable sofas and chairs, a large fireplace and a good supply of books and games to suit all ages (and toys for the younger guests). There are four bedrooms - two doubles and two twins. One of the twins is on the upper ground floor (where you enter) and the others are downstairs. All the downstairs bedrooms have French windows opening on to the terrace. The three bathrooms have modern designer fittings. There is no television or phone line - we’ve tried to stick to the ‘switch off from life’ ethos - but wifi access is good. There is also a separate, converted barn which is a great extra space for sketching, reading or simply gathering.
Outside there’s lots of space for everyone, both sun-worshippers and shade lovers alike. There’s a shaded eating terrace just outside the front door with great views. The pergola and converted barn are good spots for a sundowner as they overlook Monte Soratte. There are lush terraced gardens leading to the lower pool terrace, below which is the olive grove and orchard. The pool is 10m x 4m (1.5m deep at the shallow end). It is fenced and set away from the main garden and has plenty of sunloungers surrounding it.
