Perfectly showcasing the ability to balance comfort with sustainability, this authentic rural guesthouse in the heart of the Auvergne in France is the ultimate in ‘off the grid’ holiday accommodation.
Designed with technology and minimalism in mind, this French countryside farmhouse is a wonderful showcase for energy self-sufficiency. The rooms are simple, cool and comfortable, the whole site is an awe-inspiring display of biomass heating and solar power, and the unspoilt surroundings are heaven for hikers, bikers, kayakers, wildlife lovers, artists and explorers. If you’re looking to experience something completely unique (and you want to do it with a clear conscience) then Auvergne Off The Grid is exactly the place to do it.
The Auvergne region is rugged and beautiful, with plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, canoeing and rafting. The wildlife is plentiful and varied, and you may get to see squirrels, hares, otters or even wild boar. Rustic pursuits like mushroom picking, jam making and foraging are available. Or you can explore one of the many Romanesque churches and then have lunch in Chastel (10 minutes away), Langeac or Saint-Flour (30 minutes by car).
The farmhouse is only reachable by road or track and directions are provided. The nearest public transport/taxi services are 30km away. Transfer from the nearest coach or train stations (Saint-Flour, Langeac) is complimentary.

The farmhouse (whose foundations date back to the 16th century) offers a unique blend of modern technology and vintage design, with an open-plan living space with wood-fired boiler stove on the ground floor and three en-suite bedrooms on the first floor. The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering and the owners can source local produce with which to fill the fridge, but meals based around salads, soups, grills, stews, local cheese and fresh fruits can also be provided.
The farmhouse is surrounded by several gardens (2,000 square meters altogether).
No pets, no smoking and no shoes inside the house (slippers will be provided). Eating in the bedrooms is not allowed. Payment is to be settled at the time of the booking. The host speaks English and can help you with anything you may need.
