General Info

A unique villa in a stunning location next to a river. Unlike ubiquitous 'luxury tropical villas' found all over Asia, this full of character. It is the second home of an English professor, with furniture and artefacts from Bali, collected over the years. Villa Tukad is in a secluded position in a village, with traditional temples providing local culture. The villa is close to local beaches at Canggu, and a 30 min drive from the smart bars, restaurants and shops of Seminyak. Bicycles are provided for exploring the lanes, rice terraces, villages, forests and coastline. The personal cook always impresses, whether preparing local or western dishes. July and August are high season, with very little rain and temperatures from 19 - 27C. The weather is mostly fine mid season from April to November. The rainy season is December - March, but you can still expect plenty of sunshine between tropical showers. SINCE 2012 WE HAVE A NEW VILLA NEXT DOOR, AND CAN NOW ACCOMMODATE up to 10 GUESTS

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

In a village location (local temples), and away from the main tourist sites, the villa is only 10 mins from Canggu beach, and 20 mins from the smart restaurants and shops of Seminyak. Basic shopping nearby, but the staff will do your food shopping at nearby bakeries, local markets and western supermarkets. Some of the finest restaurants in Asia are within 25min by car. The nearest beach has cafe and bar open all day, seafood barbecue every night and live music at weekends. Three temples in the village have traditional music and ceremonies. Echo Beach (ten minutes) is a major surfing beach. Bicycles are available for riding to the beach and through the rice terraces, etc. The island's main golf, spa resort and sports club is 15 min. Ubud, the major cultural centre is 45 min by car.

This is usually where you would have a massage, which can be easily arranged. The villa contains a wealth of Balinese antiques and wood carving. All bedrooms have air conditioning, fans and mosquito nets. Balinese cribs with fitted mosquito nets can be made available for babies (baby sitting can be arranged). SINCE 2012 WE HAVE A NEW VILLA NEXT DOOR, AND CAN NOW ACCOMMODATE up to 10 GUESTS.

Exterior Details
From the veranda - an indoor/outdoor space for dining and relaxing on day beds - you look out over the secluded pool and spectacular tropical gardens. The garden extends to the river and contains 3 pavilions with cushions and sofas. water features, stone carvings and shrines, and a cool infinity pool (10 X 4 metres) surrounded by palms, giant ferns, orchids and bougainvillea. There are four pool loungers.

Further Details
Villa Tukad has been wowing guests, especially from UK and France, for seven years. The view of the gardens from the verandah is something you never forget. There is a special contact with nature here, perhaps something to do with the spirits to whom the staff make offerings at the garden shrines in small ceremonies every evening. The staff are Hindu and are mindful of the spirits. They are happy to share their local culture and take you to ceremonies, at the temples which usually involve what in a tourist site would be called a 'cultural show' but which is done here for the locals only. There are also Buddhist, Islamic and Maori artefacts in the villa, so all the gods are smiling on you! The gardens contain two pavilions with sofas and cushions. They are positioned by a fish pond, and by a stream that runs through the garden. These are perfect places to relax, read, snooze or have a Balinese massage. There are also four recliners around the swimming pool, and a day bed on the veranda. Note that there are five staff who work at the villa. They are responsible for gardening, pool maintenance, cleaning, shopping, washing, ironing and cooking. In addition the villa manager will call each day if you wish to help you with any problems, organise transport, money changing, and suggest places to visit. The villa is non-profit making and all rental proceeds are spent on the villa, on offerings at the temples, and local charities. The staff receive a reasonable salary and 10% of rentals as a bonus. We aim to keep the villa as eco-friendly as possible and recycle what we can through Eco-Bali, a local recycling service.

Conditions of Rental
A 30% deposit is required before your booking can be confirmed. You can pay using telegraphic transfer or UK cheque. The balance is due at least four weeks before arrival. The rates include airport transfers (for stays of more than 7 nights) and basic items at the villa, such as water, toilet paper, mosquito coils, etc.. Food and drink can be purchased by the staff in advance (and during your stay) - you only need to give the staff the cost of the items. You will be surprised how much money you save compared with staying in a hotel, plus you will receive personal service. We can arrange for you to be met at the airport by a driver and brought to the villa where staff will welcome you to the house and explain everything you might need to know. Domestic and gardening staff are available every day. The villa manager is available most days to help with shopping, and ideas for tours, cultural, leisure and sports activities. Safe deposit boxes are provided for cash and valuables.
