The Quarry is a large, luxury, child friendly, detached Victorian house standing in ½ acre of private, terraced gardens. It has magnificent views over Ilfracombe & out to sea. This unique, self catering villa backs directly onto the South West coastal path, and has a privately owned beach a 5 min walk away. The 3 miles of golden sands & great surf at Woolacombe are a 10 min drive.
Inside the The Quarry is bright, stylish & comfortable - the result of a huge 4 year restoration programme by the owners - an artist & an interior designer. It was built in 1890 as a holiday home for an Admiral, and retains many impressive period features. Sleeping up to 13 people in 7 bedrooms it's a perfect place for a family gathering or a friends get together. Nestling in the hillside, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the rooms & terraces afford amazing views. Ilfracombe itself is a pretty harbour town with some great cafes & restaurants - including Damien Hirst's no 11 The Quay. The highly regarded Saunton Sands golf course is a 20 min drive. If you wish to cook yourself, there is a fantastically well equipped kitchen with AGA, Miele extra sized oven & hob, larder, American fridge/freezer. The owners can also supply details of a great local caterer who can prepare delicious meals for you to bung in the AGA, or come to the house & serve a grand dinner (& clear up!)
North Devon has so much to offer. There are the stunning expanses of golden sand & surf at Woolacombe & Croyde. The tranquility of Exmoor & its picturesque villages, and the dramatic coastline - perfect to explore by boat. Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO world heritage site, is awe inspiring. It is also close to the well known Saunton Sands Golf Club with its great links course. On rainy days Barnstaple is well worth a visit, especially on market day.
The nearest train station is Barnstaple, this is a branch line from Exeter. We are about a 20 min taxi ride from Barnstaple. If you're coming from London, and there are a few of you, get the train to Tiverton Parkway (2.25 hrs from Paddington) & arrange for a taxi to drive you to Ilfracombe. The journey is about 1 hour. Easter 2010 will see the new Swansea / Ilfracombe passenger ferry, sailing twice daily & taking c.50 min each way. Driving directions can be provided on booking.

The magnificent 38ft sitting room/dining room/library has french doors onto a seaview terrace. This striking, sunny room has sofas & chairs to seat 12, log fire, huge plasma with full sky package & DVD, wooden floors & a large dining table to seat 12. The library has an interesting array of books, DVDs & games. The kitchen also has a table to seat 6 & french doors onto a sunny kitchen terrace with fish pond & fresh herbs. All the rooms are spacious & sunny. Floors have been stripped & polished & original works of art adorn the walls. In the first floor bathroom an original claw foot bath sits proudly by the fireplace. Much of the sanitary ware was bought from antique shops, apart from the wonderful drench showers - one with a 12 inch rose. In addition to the main kitchen there is a small top floor kitchen - ideal for a quiet breakfast. The original detached vine room, complete with bountiful grape vines & nectarine tree, also offers a warm quiet spot to relax in a deckchair.
The sloping gardens, 1/2 acre in total, offer many secluded spots to enjoy the views. The 'secret' garden is laid to lawn & surrounded by shrubs. It's a good place to hide away with a book. Off the vine room is a BBQ terrace with an outside table to seat 14, and great views. The kitchen terrace has a washing line, fish pond & bench to enjoy the afternoon sun. The magnificent sea view front terrace (off the sitting room / dining room) has a table to seat 6, a small lawn & a handmade wendy house. This area is completely enclosed by fences and is perfect for even very young children. The back garden is steeply sloping with various terraces & many trees. Its great for older kids to play. There is a back driveway, which takes you onto the South West coastal path. This beautiful & dramatic walkway winds round the cliffs to Lee, Morthoe, Woolcombe & beyond. The house is reached via a steep driveway. There is parking, and turning space, for 3 cars.
The Quarry has been featured in The Mail on Sunday, Red magazine, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Conde Nast Traveller, 25 Beautiful Homes, Grazia, The Surrey Advertiser and The Evening Standard. It's a stunning house, with an individual & welcoming interior in a wonderful location. We hope you will come & stay soon.
