Sithean is a beautifully designed and family friendly house sleeping up to 8 people and set on a working hill farm overlooking Glen Lonan in Scotland. With access to beautiful birch woodlands, a private sauna, and spectacular views of Loch Etive and the surrounding mountains, it's a wonderful spot for a Scottish holiday.
Sithean is self contained and peaceful. It has been designed to sleep six to eight people, and can accommodate two families. This lovely new holiday house in Scotland has South and West facing dining areas (inside and outside), and commands spectacular views. If you are seeking some peace and some luxury, then Sithean is the perfect spot!
The village of Taynuilt has a golf course, excellent tea-room, post office, well-stocked village store, a bar and tennis courts. The village has a train station on the Oban to Glasgow line, and is on the main Oban-Glasgow bus route. There are plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling in the surrounding area. Oban, the 'Gateway to the Isles', is 12 miles away, and has a host of shops and restaurants, as well as its own distillery with guided tours. From Oban you can catch ferries to the islands of Lismore, Kerrera, Mull and Tiree which all provide fabulous days out. On a day trip from Oban to Mull it is possible to also visit the beautiful island of Iona and its Abbey, or Staffa and the Treshnish Isles which have breeding colonies of puffins and other seabirds. Regular buses also run to Tobermory in the North of Mull.
This holiday house in Scotland is located just outside the village of Taynuilt, off the A85 between Crianlarich and Oban. In the centre of Taynuilt is a cross roads, take the road next to the hotel signed for Glen Lonan (not the road into the village). Just over a mile along this road, there is a cattlegrid, and a second just under a mile later. The turning to Sithean is on the left, shortly before the second cattlegrid. We can provide a pick-up service from the local train station (Taynuilt) and bus stop, and can facilitate bike or car hire.

On the entry level there is a porch which is ideally suited for drying wet boots and clothes. This leads on the one side to a shower-room and a double bedroom with a mezzanine and twin beds, and on the other side to the kitchen. The kitchen, dining and living areas are open plan with a vaulted ceiling, and are attractively divided by a split level floor and earth brick walls. The living area has a radio/stereo and a TV and DVD player. There is a wood burning stove in the living area, and under-floor heating throughout the house. Downstairs there is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a bathroom with a sauna which has direct access onto a decking area. The design allows an intimate connection with the birch woods from the lower level.
There is a substantial decking area where you can sit and enjoy the peace, and visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding grassland and paths. There is an amazing range of wildlife; hen harriers breed in the rough grassland below the house, deer wander down off the heather hill and red squirrels breed in the surrounding oak and birch woodlands.
Sithean has been constructed using environmentally benign materials where possible, and promoting materials which can be re-used and re-cycled. We have used hemp insulation, and the house is clad with European Larch, which does not need to be chemically treated. The walls are built using unfired earth bricks for thermal mass and moisture control, covered with earth plaster to give a very natural textured surface. This gives a sense of intimacy and cosiness in contrast to the openness of the space in the living area. The design of the house minimises energy usage and loss, maximises passive solar gain potential and makes the most of the natural daylight. We sought professional advice on environmental efficiency, and an architect who specialises in green building technologies. The house has been carefully designed to have minimal disturbance on the natural contours of the site, allowing visitors to feel a strong connection to the environment surrounding the house.
Conditions of Rental
Weekly bookings at this holiday house in Scotland run Friday to Friday. Out of season short breaks may be available during November, December, January, February and March, except half term week, Christmas and New Year. Different arrival/departure dates may be possible by arrangement.
