Want to stay in a castle for your next holiday? Haldon Belvedere, or Lawrence Castle, stands some 244 metres above sea level in 5 acres of secluded woodland with panoramic views extending to Dartmoor, Exmoor and the River Exe valley. Steeped in history this grade II* listed building was built by Sir Robert Palk in 1788 as the centre piece to the vast Haldon Estates and as a memorial to his friend and benefactor Major General Stringer Lawrence, the founder of the Indian army. It once entertained distinguished guests such as King George III and more recently TV personalities. Lovingly refurbished by Devon Historic Buildings Trust, the building has fine examples of 18th century architecture with ornate plasterwork, gothic windows, coadstone statue, mahogany flooring and marble fireplaces.
The Haldon Belvedere makes the perfect base from which to visit the beautiful Devon countryside. There are some excellent restaurants and inns nearby if you wish to eat out as well as many fine walks and excellent bike trails in Haldon Forest Park on the doorstep. The delights of Devon are all nearby and easily accessible - Dartmoor National Park, gorgeous beaches, The Jurassic Coast (England's first natural World Heritage Site) are all within a 10 mile radius. Haldon Belvedere is only 6 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter where an extravaganza of shopping can be found in the traditional cobbled streets or the new Princesshay shopping centre.
You can find us by turning off the A38 at the Exeter Racecourse exit and following the Tourist signs for Haldon Belvedere and Haldon Forest Park. Some 2 miles from the A38 you will pass Haldon Forest Park on the left and continue on this road for 1 mile when you will come to a junction named Haldon Gate. The drive leading to the castle is on the right a few metres beyond this junction. Guest parking is available directly adjacent to the building.

The top floor has been stylishly transformed into a spacious apartment, accessed by the spiral stone staircase with its cantilevered steps, wrought iron balustrade and mahogany handrail. Leading from the charming open plan living/bedroom area there is a separate bathroom and contemporary kitchen built into the circular turret rooms. The apartment is fully equipped for two persons to include a flat screen TV with freeview channels, DVD player, bed linen, heating, towels, crockery, cutlery, traditional bath with thermostatic shower over it and a comfortable super king size bed. Everything you need to unwind, relax and enjoy an unforgettable break. This is a castle holiday with a difference.
The panoramic views from the Haldon Belvedere are truly stunning but the best views are from the roof terrace to which guests have access via the spiral staircase during their stay. With a decked seating area and a 360 degree vista , the roof terrace is perfect for watching sunrise, or star gazing. Simply relax and enjoy the peace and quiet in this breathtaking location. The Haldon Belvedere is nestled at the top of a private gated driveway within its own woodland with lawns, picnic area and the beautiful historic King’s Bridge. Due to its secluded position a car is essential and guest parking is available directly adjacent to the building.
Minimum stay is usually three nights on a self catering basis. The accommodation being let is the top floor apartment only. We may be able to accomodate bookings of one or two days - please contact the office.
Conditions of Rental
Provisional bookings are held for 7 days then a deposit of one third of the rental cost is required (non-refundable but transferable) to secure your booking. The balance will be due 12 weeks before your arrival date. If booking within 12 weeks of arrival the full amount is due at time of booking. All heating, lighting and VAT included. You see, if you want to stay in a castle, it doesn't have to cost the earth.
