What visitors have said about Rio Magnolia Eco Lodge

Reviewed December 28, 2010 Rio Magnolia is the dream made reality of its' owners John & Maureen Patterson and without doubt you couldn't meet people whose dream you'd rather experience! Wake up to a beautiful hidden gem of an eco-lodge hidden in the Costa Rican hills with the most spectacular view of the landscape descending to the Pacific coast, breakfast whilst hummingbirds sip nectar within feet of your table and the river rushes by in the valley below, swim in the infinity pool beneath the hot sun or walk through the rainforest that surrounds the property spotting the birds and creatures of the forest such as sloth or howler monkeys, trek with John to a hidden waterfall or ride the characterful horses along Rio Magnolias' trails, learn Spanish, spot wildlife, or have a great manicure or pedicure with Magnolias' brilliant staff and then settle down for a quiet yet sociable, candlelit evening experiencing the very special menus' prepared by the wonderfully talented Maureen, marvel at the many species of moth that visit the lodge's outside lights at night, and then sleep expectantly 'til the next dawn and opportunity to experience life to the full the next morning!

Reviewed May 5, 2011 Incredible natural beauty, wonderful views, in the midst of nature, Maureen and John and their staff are excellent hosts. Delicious meals, great hiking right off the property, easy to arrange trips to nearby beaches, national parks, horseback treks, etc--or perfect to stay and relax in one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica. Birds and other wildlife abound. Cannot say enough wonderful things about this very special place. Breakfast on the deck, toucans in the trees. Watching sunset from our balcony. Beautiful rooms and common areas. Great swimming pool. Perched on a hill with beautiful views of the valley, mountains and sea. John and Maureen know just how to make a guest comfortable and at peace in a magnificent setting. We will definitely be returning. This is our third trip to Costa Rica, a destination we always enjoy. Rio Magnolia is especially wonderful, we will stop for a stay in Rio Magnolia on all our future trips to Costa Rica..

Rio Magnolia is a paradise. We woke to see Toucans on our balcony and a sloth in the trees just beyond. Breakfast with the hummingbirds was a daily joy. Rio Magnolia is that rare place that combines luxury with responsible eco-tourism. The meals were feasts of fabulously fresh produce direct from local farms and our hosts Maureen and John Paterson were warm, welcoming and great company. The staff were incredible - friendly, helpful and absolutely delightful. Stay longer than you think as there is so much to do. We stayed at Rio Magnolia for 9 days and enjoyed every minute. Rio Magnolia is a perfect base for day trips like snorkelling, zip lining and horse riding (we did all these and had a ball). We also made a day trip to Manuel Antonio National Park . There's also fishing and hiking tours. We could have stayed longer!

What John and Maureen have accomplished boggles the brain. Their lodge is as magnificent as the location. They are the consummate hosts, thinking of every last detail. The food, the service, the rooms, the yummy margaritas, the spectacular views, if you are looking for a place to get away from it all, this is it. Driving in on a narrow, very bumpy, very steep jungle road and rounding the last corner to see their lodge through the trees seems like a mirage. How can this be? And after viewing it in person, it still seems like a mirage. How did they build this incredible structure way out in the jungle? And you have to go see the power plant with John. That alone is worth the price of admission! One thing to consider when booking this place: Your breakfast and dinner are both included. That makes it downright reasonable to stay here, especially considering the quality of the meals. But then the best part of all? We feel like we have truly made new friends. Thanks John and Maureen! PS: John-the only thing missing is a T-Rex peeking over the balcony. Could you do something about that??
