Monte Saraz (Refuge of Peace) is an eighteenth-century restored farming estate, where history combines with comfort, good-taste and hospitality. Providing rest and relaxation in comfortable separate buildings or in suites, all offer a quiet stay among gardens, orchards and olive groves. Break up the R&R with a dip in the swimming pool (shaped by the arches of an old oil press!), and then immerse yourself in undiscovered Alentejo - half way between Sevilla and Lisbon.
This stunning estate, where you can rest far away from the confusion of the city, Monte is surrounded by birdsong and by the renowned olive grove of Pega. The houses are situated among gardens and ponds covered in water-lilies, as well as a citrus fruit orchard. All of these encourage relaxation, sunbathing and reading at your leisure broken only by the occasional dip in the refreshing swimming-pool. During the evening you can have a poolside dinner under a starry sky with having the illuminated medieval castle town of Monsaraz as a backdrop, and a soundtrack of crickets and cicadas.
Built on a promontory (a rarity in the Alentejo plain), the medieval castle town of Monsaraz rises like a scene from some enchanted tale, past and present mingling in a unique feast of unparalleled beauty and history. Only five minutes on the road from Monte Saraz, this settlement is one of the oldest in Portugal, with an almost untouched whitewashed row of houses of limestone and schist, the castle and the walls, the churches and the old courts with precious frescos. Occupied since prehistoric times because of its privileged defensive position (the surrounding megalithic monuments prove this), it was inhabited successively by the Romans, Arabs, Jews and Christians, providing the visitor with an interesting startpoint into the history of the Iberian Peninsula.
From Lisbon: Take the A6 to Évora and from there follow the signs indicating Beja/Reguengos (IP2), after about 15 kilometres take the EN 267 to Reguengos. At the exit of this town, turn to the left, in the direction to Monsaraz through Sao Pedro do Corval. Some 6 kilometres outside that village, in a bend, you will find a signpost indicating OLIVAL DA PEGA, MONTE SARAZ on the right hand side. Proceed on the dirt road that will take you to Monte Saraz.

Monte Saraz offers traditional architecture as well as the comfort found in any modern residence (such as underfloor heating). The Casa de Lagar (main building) contains two suites, and this is where breakfast is served. There are 4 small separate farmhouses and 1 more suite. All are furnished and decorated stylishly, with occasional collected ethnic art and crafts. Suites are double rooms with private bathroom and WC, heating and TV & direct access to gardens & pool - 2 have mezzanines with an extra bed and private entrance. In the winter, breakfast is served in the large sitting room - decorated in warm shades of yellow and red and with a crackling fire in the grate. In the summer breakfast is served outside in the claustro near the main swimming pool. The enormous kitchen maintains the original vaulted ceiling, as well as the rustic marble benches where old utensils and fresh products of the region are stored - just like in old times.
All houses have direct access to patios, perfumed by rose gardens or sited around a green and purple garden. All houses have direct access to the main swimming pool and the smaller children's pool.

Conditions of Rental
Charge is inclusive of breakfast. However, for a stay for more than 2 nights in the houses, you may choose the Self-Catering option as there are fully-equipped kitchens for this purpose. Reservations include a one night deposit or clients credit card details. We will not charge if cancelled at least 7 days in advance. Ask for our payment and cancellation policy.
