What visitors have said about Hotel Masia Sumidors

We will never forget our stay at Sumidors. We arrived the day after our Civil Partnership and within minutes we were celebrating with total strangers who felt like friends. This beautiful oasis attracts good people, and we enjoyed many a dinner with lively conversation and Iain's fantastic food. I'm a vegetarian and he came up with some perfect dishes just for me. Neil and Iain are such great hosts. Everything about the hotel has that personal touch, it resonates with an energy we would all love to live full time. The guys work hard to make sure your stay is perfect, from Neil's endless ironing to Iain's inspired cooking. The first morning we woke up they had just saved a little parrot and were nurturing it. These are great guys who have created something truly special. We planned to travel whilst we were there but Sumidors was too good to leave. We did venture once down the hill to a fabulous restaurant, and the walk was not a problem. It was a gorgeous stroll down through the lush hillside and a pleasant walk back, but do take a torch. We have both travelled the world, and this little haven in Catalonia truly stands out. We will definitely be returning, and we will take our friends to see just what a gem we have discovered. If you are thinking of going, stop. Book it. It is Heaven.

It was last year that we stayed at this terrific property and my stay still stays with me as a highlight of our trip. As all the reviews mention, Ian and Neil are the perfect hosts and its the small comforts they offer that other hotels don't that make this a great spot. All of their bedding is hung out to dry outside. There is no amount of fabric softener that can capture that fresh aroma and crispness of sheets hung on the line combined with the evening breeze and the quiet of being in such a secluded spot in the forrest that our busy New York lifestyle melted away. Having no television was great. Gathering around the outdoor honor bar and socializing with Ian and Neil and other guests was a treat. It is only 10 minutes to Sitges and is a great location to travel other locations. You can park your car at the train station and take a quick 25 minute ride into Barcelona and not worry about driving or parking in the city. They play classical music on the train. Staying at Masia Sumidors is like visiting friends or family that you LIKE! It has a rustic rambling boho feel that was perfect for these two New Yorkers who live in a typically small UWS apt.! One note to be aware of. The rooms in the main house did not have AC which requires you keep your windows open. If you are a light sleeper (like the other couple we traveled with) you should choose a room that does not face the patio. The noise from guests that sometimes socialize a little late might annoy you. If you go to Stiges and book a different hotel, take the time to drive up and have a drink with Ian and Neil. You'll be sure to book your next stay with them.

Wow! What a fabulous retreat, after the inital shock of the last kilometre up a very small winding road you are rewarded by a haven of peace and quiet. We stayed for 6 nights in the Suite (room 8) which was very comfortable and in a private location from the main house so you had total peace and quiet. Shabby Chic is the best way to describe this rustic Hotel it is just beautiful. Run by 2 British guys who go out of their way to ensure you have a relaxing break, loved the honesty bar and terrace where you can relax and read or you can go down to the lower terrace where the pool is and sun bathe and have a swim. We ate in the Hotel about 3 nights as we were so chilled we couldn't be bothered to drive into Sitges which is only 10 minutes drive away, Iain is a brilliant Chef the food was fantastic and the range of wines though small was good and very reasonably priced. You do need a car, but great location for Sitges if you wish to stay out of the turmoil but dip in when you want, 40 mins from Barcelona and Monseratt is a must! Would we go again - a definate yes the atmosphere created by these guys was total chill out!

Stayed here for 5 days in June as part of a longer holiday in Catalonia. Without doubt this was the most memorable hotel of any of the places we stayed. Located only 10 minutes by car from Sitges but it is in another world. To get to the hotel, you need detailed directions and the last bit is a steep 1 kilometer climb up a fairly rough road. Once you arrive you are rewarded by the most fantastic views over the valley below. You need a car if you stay here. It is owned by a couple of British guys Neil and Iain and comprises a 400 year old farmhouse with 7 rooms in the main house all with a distinct theme plus adjacent bungalow and suite. We stayed in 2 rooms in the house during our visit; the African room to the rear of the house and our favourite the oriental room, a little smaller but wonderful views over the countryside. This hotel will not be to everyone's taste. No high tech gadgets or even tv! All have small showers but rooms are very comfortable. Rooms are not particularly large but very farmhouse authentic with plaster walls, lots of unusual features and each decorated in a highly individual fashion. Neil and Iain run the hotel in a very relaxed way and throughout our stay it had the feel of a 'house party' There is an honesty bar where you serve yourself drinks just writing what you eat or drink in a book. Come and go as you please. Breakfast is served in the courtyard between 9 and 11am. They are also very helpful with tips on restaurants/places to visit. One tip - go on the Cororniu Cava visit to Sant Sadurni. Oldest Cava in Catalona and as well as being a museum they still make it here so you see the whole process from start to finish and includes the acres of cellars beneath the main building. Allow 2 hours for the visit and a generous tasting of Cava! Back to the hotel, there is a lovely pool with commanding views over the valley below It is only 10 minutes from Sitges and 40 minutes from Barcelona so despite its rural location it is still well positioned. Highly recommended if you want a personal hotel with a difference and you are happy to stay somewhere without the high tech of modern hotels.
Mr Riding,  UK,  Jun 2007

The warm welcome at the hotel made clear that this place is something special. The atmosphere there was like you would be home and there s some friends staying over night. Owners were absolutely fabulous! And the food was much better than ever could have been expected! So big thanks to the wonderful cook, nice meat with really nice wine! This hotel is for the people who want something different and far away of all noise and traffic etc. Pool area with shower is really relaxing with the drinks that you can get from the “honesty” bar which was really easy and also reasonably prised way to get something cold for the heat! Do not fear the location, that is the best in this hotel! For some the road to the hotel can be negative thing because it is narrow and quite long, but we took it as a funny part of the adventure! If this kind of 400 years old Masia would be right next to a highway, it would ruin the whole experience. We will definitely be back some day!
Mr Virjo,  Finland,  Jul 2006

We stayed at Masia Sumidors for 3 nights at the beginning of August. The first time you drive up the twisting unmade road to reach the hotel is somewhat 'hairy' but you get used to it after that. Sumidors is a lovely 400 year old farmhouse set on a hillside amongst trees, shrubs and vineyards but only ten minutes drive from Sitges on the coast. The minute we stepped out of our car we were made to feel like houseguests by Neil and Iain the owners. Our room, number 8 (the suite) was separate to the main building, with all original features, wooden beams, stone floors, shuttered window. We loved the four poster bed. Neil and Iain have a wonderful brand of hospitality. You are put at ease within a few minutes of arriving. The 'honesty' bar is a great feature and I would recommend Iain's delicious dinners, which we ate each evening by candlelight on the terrace. The garlic crusted mussels were to die for!! We had a barbecue the first night which was so good, we decided not to go anywhere else for our evening meal on the other 2 nights! Also we couldn't imagine anywhere else being so tranquil. As there are only 9 rooms in the property you never feel that there are too many people around, even though it was full when we stayed. There were several different nationalities who were all friendly and it was evident that everyone was happy and extremely chilled out. Our hosts were always on hand to give information and advice on the local area and we found a great winery tour from their recommendation. The swimming pool is also a great asset. Perfect for cooling off after a hot day touring the vineyards but be warned ,it is a regular suntrap and once you have settled down on a sunbed, under an umbrella with your paperback, the peace, quiet and smell of the pine trees will make you not want to leave! To sum everything up - peaceful location, rustic rooms, great food, outstanding hospitality. We will return!
Mr Dance,  UK,  Aug 2008

Just got back have to say that sumidors was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. .. the guys put us up in one of their bungalows with space to swing an elephant plus bath. It was so peaceful up in the hills and dinner with them was fantastic... Well done for finding this gem of a hotel.
James & Fran,  Dorset, UK,  Sep 2009

We have just got back froma fantastic holiday, courtesy of Neil and Iain at the hotel sumidors. Instead of just staying at a great hotel, we felt as though we had been welcomed into their amazing home. The hotel is great, its location was great for exploring Barcelona, Sitges, and the National Park, as well as Monsseratt. Neil and Iain's knowledge of the area helped make the whole week go very smoothly. When we weren't exploring, our evenings at the hotel with the great food and the warm atmosphere are the most memorable of the whole week. We recommend this holiday to anyone on this website. To not go would be to really miss a gem.
