The Retreat, our adorable Alpine Chalet is the perfect place to get away from it all. Surrounded by hillside and meadow above Slovenia's famous Soca Valley, you can escape from all the stresses and strains of modern living. Bovec, the premier outdoor sports centre in this part of Slovenia, is less than half an hour away and some of Slovenia's best hill walking trails start right outside, so you know there'll be plenty to do. Usually, however, we find that guests spend most of their time soaking in the views, the sunshine and the peace and quiet. A secluded holiday cottage with views to die for. Relax and recharge in the mountains above the gorgeous Soca Valley. |

Fishermen come from all over the world to the Soca; the best place in the world to catch the mysterious marble trout, while Bovec is developing into the premier water sports river in Europe. If you can name a white water sport, you can find it there. Rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed (think bodysurfing through river rapid) are all on offer and the river's mix of bubbling rapids and picture post card gorges mean that whichever one you opt for is bound to make for a memorable afternoon. Or, if you prefer, choose a book from the shelf, stop in at a local bakery, and spend some time lazing by the river, dabbling your feet in the water and watching everyone else get soaked. |

| Your main aim is to head for the historic town of Kobarid in Slovenia's Soca Valley, then up the mountain to the village of Livek. Italy's Trieste airport is just over 60km away and served by a number of carriers as well as Ryanair from the UK. Also, Venice airport is only 155km away and can make an ideal two-centre holiday. |

As with all our holiday accommodation we've made sure the Retreat is not just bearable for a week, but a fantastic holiday cottage you'll be dying to come back to. In the living room there's the Kamecka Pec - a traditional, tiled Slovenian stove - which makes sure the house is nice and cosy in the winter and the two foot stone walls keep it cool in the Summer. A super squishy sofa, two-metre wide bed plus the modern kitchen and bathroom mean you'll have all the comforts of home, while the lack of a TV, radio and telephone means that you can forget about all the things you have to deal with once you get here. Leave your mobile on if you must, but honestly, we wouldn't recommend it. (Psst: there is an iPod dock though - good music we need!)

The Retreat sits in a genuinely idyllic rural holiday location. Step out of the front door and you can turn right to the picnic table or left to some of the best hill walking the country has to offer. From the cottage you can trek straight up into the surrounding Alps overlooking the stunning Soca Valley. The views make it worthwhile even for the most determined couch potatoes.

If hiking isn't your thing, you can lounge around in the meadow outside or laze indoors with one of the well-thumbed books on the shelf, flick through a magazine or two or catch up on some important snoozing. If you start to feel a little too lazy, the Soca river offers Europe's most spectacular white water rafting and kayaking, or you could head into to Kobarid or Tolmin to grab coffee and stretch your legs - under the table.

"The Retreat is a beautiful, peaceful chalet. No neighbours, and spectacular views. We went for 1 week of our 2 week Slovenian honeymoon, and it was the epitome of relaxation, and peace and quiet. Great location - near several hikes, activities, beautiful villages and towns, and within easy reach of Italy, with Venice only 2 hours drive. The chalet is exceptionally well equipped and the owners were incredibly helpful throughout the booking process and during the stay. We would definitely recommend The Retreat, and are hoping to return there in the future - maybe to see the snow of the Julian Alps."
