What visitors have said about Nebesa |
| |
| |
Nebesa (translates as 'heaven') is about 900 m up in the foothills of the Soca valley just 1 km from the Italian border. Described variously as a 'chalet hotel' and a 'mountain
retreat', it's pretty much perfect, offering peacefulness with incredible and ever-changing views of the mountains and valley .
Nebesa apparently started out as an old ski lodge, but with the help of a top Slovenian architect, its owners, Katya and Bojan Ros, have turned it into a fabulous, tranquil hideaway.
Each of the four two-person chalets comprise a downstairs sitting/dining area plus a small kitchen and a shower room. Design is clean and minimalistic. Cable internet connection is included. Upstairs in the eaves there's the sleeping platform. The bed is ultra comfortable but it's easy to hit your head on the steeply sloping ceiling. It also gets a bit stifling when the weather is hot and a fan wouldn't go amiss. There's also a larger two-storey building that includes a common dining room, fitness room, heated pool, jacuzzi and sauna.
One of the added delights of Nebesa is the help yourself attitude to food and wine. Barrels of local white and red wine are very quaffable and other Slovenian wines are available at cost price. Edibles on offer include prosciutto, cured ham, wonderful mountain cheese, fruit, breads, eggs, yoghurt and preserves. All if this is included in the basic room price, which is ideal if you want to avoid going down to Kobarid for a meal.
The one restaurant that you must go to in Kobarid is Hisa Franko. This is run by Katya and Bojan's chef daughter Ana together with her husband Valter. As well as the restaurant, there's also a much plauded boutique hotel and a 'vinotek'. The food is far from Slovenian mainstream and is more akin to the culinary inventions of chefs like Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck and Ferran Adria at El Bulli.
When we first arrived at Nebesa we thought a week might be too long. The day before departure, we dreaded leaving. There's something truly extraordinary about Nebesa.

We experienced sleeping in a cloud, sleeping in a rainy cloud, sleeping in a perfect sunny day and sleeping in a fresh morning. You want to know how our life looks from heaven? Then try Nebesa. In every weather condition it is just amazing. I would really like to try it in winter. The hosts, Boian and Katia, present all the time and not present at the same time make you feel alone but not abbandoned in this paradise. The only comment we had is that the fire place in the "living room" should be lit all the time and we missed a little bit some romantic music all over the place. Then it would have been perfect.
