  General Info
Ormidale House lends itself ideally to big groups for family celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, or corporate bonding sessions. There are three other properties on site which you can also rent. Mill House (9 bedrooms), The Old Barn (7 bedrooms) and the Garden Cottage (4 bedrooms). Ormidale House was built as a seat of Clan Campbell in 1696. After ongoing minor changes through the centuries, in 1900 the house was substantially extended by the renowned Scottish architect Robert Lorimer to form the house it is today. It’s been pretty luxuriously equipped and nicely furnished, mostly with antiques. The new, comfy beds feature fabulous quality goose-down and feather duvets and gorgeous bed-linen, we’ve put some original Scottish art on the walls, bought crystal for the table and generally tried to ensure that it’s a comfortable and well-equipped place to stay, without having any of the formality or grandeur of a castle or stately home.

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
We have a host of activities on our doorstep for those who want a more adventurous, exhausting or active holiday. As well as general site-seeing and trips to the Island of Bute, Inverary and further afield, there are a host of other activities you can undertake around Glendaruel. The Cowal Way – on which we sit - is justifiably popular with walkers of all standards and styles. A lot of serious hill-walkers use this area as the best evidence there is that “Munro-bagging” is a fairly limiting activity, and that height from sea level ain’t what makes a magical walking or climbing experience. The Kyles of Bute and the immediate area really is fabulous walking country. It’s also great for touring, and fantastic for cycling for those who want to work on two wheels rather than four. There are some really excellent and quite varied routes direct from the house, involving all sorts of terrain and levels of strain!

  Getting there & away/local amenities
Getting There: Although just an hour and a half from Glasgow, Ormidale sits in some of the loveliest scenery in Scotland. The Kyles of Bute are renowned amongst both walkers and sailors as amongst the most stunning bits of coast in Scotland. Detailed driving directions provided on booking.

Exterior Details The Ormidale gardens and grounds were laid out and landscaped by a major figure in Victorian Landscape gardening. Set amidst the 20 acres of woodland, and enjoying lovely views across the glen and up the mountain, the formal gardens he designed are mainly laid to lawn and terrace. A tributary of the river Ruel runs through the gardens and there is a lovely waterfall walk within the garden. We’ve added a sunken trampoline, croquet set and football goals we’ve installed three midge machines. Each of the three houses has its own private terrace and enjoys the use of a private bit of lawned garden, with the tennis court, football pitch, woods, river, and front field all shared. Ormidale house has the biggest lawn. We have a full size commercial bouncy castle sitting outside the games cottage near the swimming pool. And there are a thousand trees to climb…

Further Details The house has the full Sky Plus TV package, plus Home Cinema surround sound DVD / CD system, 37” flat screen plasma TV and a selection of DVD’s. There is also a book and a CD library, separate HiFi system, and board games. The Billiard room has a billiard table dating from 1900, as well as dart board, card table and casino set. The playroom has electric air hockey and multi function games table including table football, mini snooker and table tennis table. There are also five sets of golf clubs and ten bikes. And for those who want to relax, there is a 10 person sauna at your disposal. We’ve gone to town with luxurious deep-fill goose and feather down duvets and pillows, and have sourced gorgeous bed-linen from the Scottish Linen Company. Each of the three big houses at Ormidale has an individual outdoor Hot tub seating 7 guests; we charge £70 per weekend or £140 per week for the use of these. This charge includes the carbon off-setting of the electricity. Whatever the weather in Argyll – and we do enjoy a remarkably mild micro-climate - this is great country for site seeing, with every corner revealing a new variation on the theme of mountain, loch, valley, sky, woodland, sea, rock, beach. The Cowal peninsula is a fabulous base for an active holiday with marvelous wildlife, numerous gardens and other tourist attractions to visit, and all sporting activities catered for.

An amazing place in an amazing location. We definitely want to come back (in fact we don’t want to leave…) A great place to celebrate our 30th birthdays.
Susanne & Stuart Armstrong

This is a magical place. The house is charming and the views breathtaking. Had a great time quad biking and found some wonderful bike rides. Loved the stream and woods around the house. Meal times were the only times we saw the children. Our dogs have had the time of their lives, too!
Sara & Ben Hooker

Wonderful weekend, stunning surroundings, in a really beautiful house perfectly suited to our mixed age, multi-family party. Fabulous gardens to explore - we hardly saw the kids during daylight hours.
