  General Info
Just north of the Algarve, in some of the most remote and unspoilt countryside in Europe, lies Quinta do Barranco da Estrada, a small oasis on the shores of a vast freshwater and mosquito-free lake. It nestles in the wild hills of the lower Alentejo - a sparsely populated region of exceptional and unique beauty. It really is rural tourism at its best. Sitting on the shores of one of Europe’s largest and cleanest lakes, just over an hour north of Faro International airport, this is a stunning lakeside location where you can really get away from it all in the real Portuguese countryside. This isn’t your average holiday accommodation - for a start there aren't TVs in every room, (it's hard to find one at all!), but if you want to come here to watch TV we'd prefer you saved your money in any case. This is a place that's special, in short, paradise!

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
Surrounded by Montados, (cork oak forests), and wild hills in a region of exceptional beauty, especially in the Spring, the Quinta is only an hour to the south or west coasts. The lake, right on your doorstep and one of the largest in Europe, (with an average summer temperature of 82ºF), is a refreshing, (and unpolluted), change from the sea, but for those who like beaches, the Algarve, as well as the spectacularly unspoilt West Coast, is only an hour away. Though close to the Algarve, it's relatively unknown, with a busy day being the sight of over five boats, and in the summer the Quinta's mature fruit and flower gardens lead guests down to the shore where a variety of watersports are on offer, overlooked by the lawns close to the water's edge. Canoes and Sailing dinghy included. There are a variety of speciality courses available, including Birdwatching and Shiatsu Massage.

What visitors have said about Quinta do Barranco da Estrada

I was needing a break after six years without a holiday, and by Googling 'Different Holidays', I found the One Off Places website and Quinta just jumped out at me. I spent quite a bit of time checking and double checking the main website, before finally booking 22 days. I did not regret it as I loved every minute of it. As a solo traveller, I got plenty of private time but also got to meet different personalities and nationalities at the communal dinners. Daniela never once repeated the meals (That's 22 different starters, mains and desserts), and all were fantastic. Frank was also a wealth of knowledge, in not just birds but other wildlife, plants and history, making most interesting dinner conversations. The dogs really will follow anyone for a walk, and the children were all very helpful. It is not a question of will I be back but WHEN will I be back?

Our second visit to the Quinta in 7 years, and the memories were right! Such an amazing place, and somewhere where my phone has little or no signal! Bliss!! Visiting with our 5 year old daughter, she immediately latched on to the 'Quinta Kids', and they had a ball! We were left to bask in the sun, enjoying a dip in the lake to cool off, and take out one of the kayaks for some excercise and to enjoy the amazing scenery and tranquility of the region. Frank, Daniella and the kids are soo welcoming and the food and company is second to none. A perfect retreat to recharge your batteries and to see an area that remains unspoilt and undeveloped. Excellent value and somewhere we will frequent far more! 10/10 - James, Liza & Holly

Every now and again, albeit not very often, something wonderful happens in your life and suffice to say, as far as holidays are concerned, Paradise in Portugal really hits the mark. The word ‘Paradise’ is often mis-used but quite honestly, this place really re-defines the word ... it is simply sensational. If you want to go to the usual ‘flesh pots’ then head to the Algarve Coast. If you want to live in comfort, in simply sumptuous surroundings, where the pace of life is horizontal, where you can relax and reflect, then look no further - this is it. The location is ‘awesome’ - there is no other word for it. Frank and Daniela are wonderful hosts - Frank is a laugh a minute and Daniela ... well her culinary skills have to be seen to be believed. Her meals would grace any top end restaurant. Nothing is too much trouble for these guys - they are quite simply ‘Top’ people. The place has a really fantastic homely feel to it. I take my hat off to Frank - he has built the place up from nothing over a considerable period of time. They are passionate about wildlife - the premises is totally sympathetic to same. Hand on heart, I can honestly say that there are no negative points - I could have wept when I left. People often make holiday promises about getting back in touch etc etc but in this instance I can honestly say .... as in the immortal words of Arnie Schwartzenegger .... “I’LL BE BACK” - and that is MOST definite.

It's quite a trip to get there, but the further you get away from Lisbon or Algarve, the closer Paradise gets. The location couldn't be any better: the rooms and the dining room all face Santa Clara lake, an unspoilt place, perfectly quiet and peaceful. Just a few steps and you can dive in it's clean and warm waters, sail or paddle in one of the Quinta's boats or canoes. Laziness can attack you without warning. Then, reading or taking a nap become the most radical sport to be done. This same laziness seriously recommends that you stay for lunch, and you won't regret it, since the meals are always different and delicious. It's a great place to stay and it's staff can't be more kind and helpful. It wasn't my first time and I'm sure it won't be the last.

If you are looking for somewhere to get away from everything then this is the place for you, all you need is a good book and the rest is guaranteed, Wonderful peaceful rural location which feels like a home from home though without all the chores. The food and wine are great and meal times are relaxed. The local cork forests provide wonderful opportunities to look at the local birdlife.

This is a must for those who want a tranquil and relaxing break. The view from the hotel was spectacular. The location could not be better. The rooms are clean, simple and very comfortable with en suite bathrooms. The atmosphere is friendly. Local village is charming and takes 20 minutes to drive to. The hotel overlooks a huge lake which can be reached by walking down a few steps where you will then find an area where you can relax and swim as well as take out a canoe or small boat. Meals are catered for throughout the day in a very nice dining area where you have a wonderful view. This is the perfect break for those who want to get away from everything and experience some paradise!

Frank McClintock's Quinta do Barranco da Estrada has everything: sun, shade, quietness, laughter, delicious food and a selection of wines that celebrate his fascination with ornithology. There are a thousand places to get away in his paradisical terraced garden which leads down to a lake which is more of a playground; with canoes, sailing boats, pedaloes, and gentle swimming to nearby islands. We especially loved the dogs: Sideways, Molly, Pesca, Meiktila and Honey. Once you're there - why leave?

This is a well organised, welcoming operation taking a real interest in looking after it's clients. The host team provide good food, accomodation and advice about the surrounding area. The owner has developed the site over two decades and has sensitively suited the building and gardens to the very beautiful surroundings. He is an expert ornithologist providing practical advice on, for example, the best chances of seeing great bustards. Whilst the food is good there is a nearby pousada for (much) more expensive eating! Wonderful walking country.
John Rudd,  Somerset

The most isolated & scenic location that you could ever wish to stay in. The Quinta is arrived at via a 4k dirt road and sits on a hill gently sloping down into the lake where a small jetty with sun loungers awaits. The location is as stunning, isolated and romantic as you could ever hope for - this is a place to relax & soak up the views as much as possible - the Andorinha suite with its own private garden is well recommended to give even further seclusion
Declan McBride,  Dublin

We went in search of wildlife (particularly birds and dragonflies) and with Franks expert help we found plenty. Our stay at the Quinta was truely enjoyable and we were always made to feel welcome as if part of the family. Not really on the tourist trail (but adds to the sense of adventure) you can still reach the west coast and plains without too much difficulty. We will go back to see our new friends at the Quinta and sample once again Daniella's great cooking.

We wanted to be alone but also have a friendly, family atmosphere close at hand that included good home cooking. We were seeking plenty of varied wildlife in an unspoilt part of old sunny Southern Europe. Fussy? Sure we were fussy. Why? Because we were on our honeymoon! We worked hard to find such a place where the locals were friendly and the host was an expert on the best places to see birds so that we could book three of our days to go with him or her. Lastly, we wanted somewhere reasonably remote and where we, ourselves, could also discover some of the wildlife for ourselves as well. We wanted a break from the strictly organised group tours that often seem to just tick off species. We wanted time to watch and take in what we saw. Our two weeks at The Quinta with Frank, Daniella and family as hosts was beyond our wildest dream. Our first day out with Frank McClintock at the end of March on the plains of Alentejo round Mertola was unbelievable. Montague Harriers had arrived and were seen hunting at close quarters. He took us to where he had recently seen Great and Little Bustards and Black-bellied Sand grouse (and this varies from year to year). Not only did we have excellent views but some of the bustards were displaying and the sand grouse flew close by. Also we saw Calandra larks, Lesser Kestrel and so much else. With Frank we never felt hurried. It was often our decision to move on. It was a refreshing change. There were many surprises. On our days to the South we were equally successful, not just with birds but with dragonflies and butterflies. These were our speciality, to give him something back, so to speak, for his efforts on our behalf. He now Emails me to say he’s got the dragonfly bug! Then there were the days when we went on our own, with a lot of help planning our route from Frank and Daniella. A lot could be found within walking distance of the Quinta. In a small valley with a stream we discovered the Afro-endemic One-Leafed Squill and Lorquin Blue butterflies fluttering low round our feet. Other flowers were Green Winged Orchids and Western Peony and butterflies included Marsh and Provencal Fritillaries, Spanish Festoon, Brimstone and Cleopatras. It was Spring and we felt it all around. Subalpine Warblers had arrived and their song blended with Woodlarks and Nightingales. Beeeaters suddenly called overhead. A Western Clubtail dragon landed beside us. The place stays in our hearts. We thoroughly recommend it and not just for honeymooners. It gives something back to you. It’s like love.

Paradise in Portugal is marketed as peaceful, idyllic, beautiful and a perfect 'get away from it all' destination - it is all of these things and more. The surrounding countryside is stunning and filled with wild flowers and wildlife. The owners are just great! They provide a brilliant service, great food (and loads of it!) and treat you almost like family. If you want rowdy night life and 5* luxury then this isn't the place for you, but if like us you enjoy great company, wildlife, walking and a waterside location then look no further! WE'RE GOING BACK!!!!
Des Powers,  Nottingham

This is a wonderful, small, intimate retreat - a special world created by owners Frank and Daniela. The rooms and public areas are great and the food (served family style) is wonderful. Breakfast includes a wonderful selection of cheeses, and fresh orange juice pressed minutes before it is served. It is a place to relax, but also a good base for great side trips. The hotel is at the end of an unpaved, but well-maintained 4 km road. If your idea of a side trip is to hit the autoroute and burn up the miles, this place is not for you. But if you want incredible views of hills, lakes and wildflowers, you will love this entrance road and the countryside all around. You can go east to the incredibly beautiful and under-populated plains, west to the coast and great seaside towns, or south to Monchique and the mountains. It's a beautiful part of Portugal. Frank will give you all the driving directions, and you will discover beautiful country roads - paved, but with almost no traffic. A Portugal you would probably not discover on your own. I highly recommend a one-day birding trip with Frank. He knows and loves his birds, their habits and habitats. He's also full of knowledge about the countryside, its ecology, its flowers and its history. We had an unforgettable day.

Hi Daniela and Frank Thanks so much for a lovely week – we had such a nice time. It was just what we needed. The rest of our holiday was good too – but not as nice as our week with you. We really missed you after we’d left! Very best wishes to all of you. Love Sarah and Jack
