Villa Aureli is a 16th century mansion, refurbished in the middle of the 18th century, which still contains the distinctive decorations, furniture, Italian-style garden and above all the atmosphere of past times. For more than 20 years we have rented 2 apartments in the main villa (for 5/6 and 4-8 guests), and for the last 2 years 2 more apartments in the newly refurbished house of the former gardener (for 5 and 4 guests respectively). |

General Info |

| |
In the heart of Umbria, near the ancient city of Perugia, Villa Aureli stands like a jewel in a hilly countryside, where lines of pine trees mark the horizon. The villa dates back to the 18th century when Count Sperello Aureli restored a 16th century tower adorning it with frescoes, prints, and painted furniture. Among the wonders of the house, the colourful Vietri ceramic floors, different in each room, the bright fist floor gallery, the garden ornamental walls and the orangerie. The present owner, Sperello di Serego Alighieri, works on astrophysics at the Firenze Observatory. He offers two apartments where the guests enjoy the rare beauty of the villa and two apartments in the house of the former gardener Adolfo. All the guests have private spaces in the park, with wonderful views on the hilly Umbrian countryside. The pool (12x4), made out the ancient water cistern, is set in a sheltered area of the park, with southern exposure. On demand, dinners and wines of the house are served. |

Further Details |
At Villa Aureli we try to preserve the environment and to offer our guests a stay consistent with the ecosystem. When the villa and the garden were made some centuries ago, there where no electricity nor gas, and chemical fertilizers did not exist. Both were therefore built in order to minimize
energy needs. The thick walls isolate the rooms from cold in winter and from heat in summer. The water pipes collecting rain from the roofs and leading it to the orangerie, to the fountain and to the water tank of the vegetable garden used to collect water for the garden without energy consumption. Modern life needs extra energy, so we provided to install a system of photovoltaic solar panels that covers the needs of all the apartments, including air-conditioning in Adolfo’s House, where the walls are not as thick as in the Villa. We offer our guests meals prepared using the natural products of our farm, following the traditions of Umbrian cookery.

What visitors have said about Villa Aureli |
| |
| |
Again we have been back to this fabulous Villa Aureli - now for the third time. And be sure - we will be back again as soon as we can. It has been an exceptionally hot and dry week, much warmer than usual, so it was perfect to be able to "cool" down (ehum) in the 27°C water of he pool: In our holiday month of july this year in Norway we had no summer at all (the wettest July since 1939!) so we were not so disappointed to have sun and warmthhere, and the warmth and hospitality of the staff, not to mention the dogs and cat! - is a house bonus. Thanks to everybody, will see you again another year!

Thanks so much for allowing us to stay in such a beautiful place. We loved it! For my high school graduation present I wanted to see Italy. Staying in this Villa has made it such a wonderful experience for us. Not only is the Villa itself beautiful but also the amazing view of the Italian countryside and the friendly staff have been great! Luckily we have 1 more week to stay in the downstairs apartment because I am not ready for our stay to end! Thanks again!

Location
We enjoyed two wonderful stays at the Villa Aureli. Its location is perfect, right in the heart of Umbria. The Villa is near Perugia, at the output of a village, close to many nice famous Umbrian cities.
Five minutes walk to go the caffé, where we had cappuccino and "treccia" every morning. Supermarket and stores are five minutes drive. And many good restaurants in the neighborhood.
The luminous, sophisticated flat we stayed in, as well as the garden are exceptional. We passed delicious moments in the beautiful living room, reading, looking at the fresco and the fantastic Piranese, or watching our daughter playing in the garden.
The garden is very beautiful and the sheep in the meadow facing the Villa were a lovely sight. We keep in mind the output of the lemon trees.
At our first stay at the Villa Aureli we have been received by Carla, the owner, she was just charming and friendly. Her son was also there and he organized for us a visit of the Villa, it was enthralling and exciting. The guard Quinto and his family are also nice and attentive. The second time Sperello was there too and received us. For our daughter and us, it was like we found a friendly house full of good memories.
Carla and Sperello probably speak excellent English, but as we are French we just can tell their French is perfect.
The website is very well done and give a good idea of the place. Except for the living room on the 2nd floor flat: on the photo it looks a little like a corridor, in reality it is fantastic, we spent amazing hours in this room.
As you will see in the visitor book, we are not the first to fall in love with the Villa and its charming owners.
We have been received with hospitality, in a way that was simple as well as charming and elegant. The Villa is a house that one leaves reluctantly, with the wish to come back.

We rented the “Second Floor Apartment” in the Villa Aureli for the week of 19-26 September 2009. We were delighted with our stay in this historic and beautiful villa. The second floor apartment also includes a spacious reception hall on the first floor. All in all it seemed we had about 2,000 square feet of living space, featuring antique furniture, hand-painted tiles on the floors and trompe l'oeil painting on the walls and ceilings. If you enjoy living as an 18th century Italian noble, you will love Villa Aureli. The apartment has many windows and (dare I say) French doors with balconies overlooking the Italian Garden, with views down the Lime tree alley, and views of the Umbrian hills in the distance. Free-range chickens and sheep in pasture made a pastoral and relaxing vista. The steep steps to the second floor (US third floor) were a minor obstacle at first, but we grew to view them as penance to reach our sanctuary. The bathroom, tucked into an eave, was comfortable with plenty of hot water. We definitely recommend the second floor apartment as comfortable, historic lodging in an area well suited for daytrips throughout Umbria. We easily ventured from Gubbio in the North, to Todi and Orvietto in the South, as well as nearby Perugia, Spello, and Bevagna. The harvest of the estate grapes at the end of the week was an exciting end to our visit. The guest book in the second floor apartment featured many repeat visitors, and we hope to be among them!

You are an inspiration to us: that in these times when the old civilization of finesse + sweetness disappears ever more, some protect it and make it flourish. So that now we take some of it with us in our memories to spread it elsewhere. The sweetness of this place is such, though, that it hurts to go.
