  General Info
Masseria “Il Frantoio” is set in the middle of a 180 acre olive grove, and is at the heart of Armando and Rosalba’s farm. It is not only where they live, with their daughter and her family, but also where, with great warmth and savoir faire, they welcome their guests. The masseria itself has eight guest bedrooms; there are two wonderfully tranquil gardens and a sixteenth century underground olive press. The farm has been using organic cultivation methods for many years, and since 2004 has been entirely organic. Nature, with its plants, animals and insects has again got its magic upper hand: there are many birds of prey on the centuries-old olive trees, the fire-fly shine again and, in spring and summer, there is a strong scent of the wild herbs that can be found along the paths that lead to the summit of the hills.

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
This is a part of the world with a simple but deep charm. The olive groves and the vineyards with the many dry-stone walls and the whitewash houses give the countryside a peaceful feel. It’s the magic of the Murgia, of the Trulli and of the caves. Cisternino, Fasano, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Alberobello, Castellana Grotte, Polignano, Monopoli are the main centres in the area. The architecture is of particular interest: the white houses of Ostuni, the trulli, the rococo buildings of Martina Franca. The countryside has endless walking paths where you can feast your eyes on the centuries old olive trees, blooming flowers and many farms. There is an 18 hole golf course just 15km from the farm (with sea views). The owners can advise you of numerous cycle routes. The beach is just a 15 minute drive – choose from beaches with facilities and watersports, or explore some of the less well known coves. The owners can help organise tours if you so choose.

Interior Details The eight guest rooms are all in the 19th century part of the masseria, which has been converted with great attention to tradition, comfort and detail. Aside from the bedrooms, there are a number of communal areas including a kitchen, sitting rooms, a reading room with a library of 1500+ books and the restaurant which is also open to the public. The rooms themselves have high ceilings and ensuite bathrooms, and are furnished with traditional pieces, much of which has been in the family for many years. The rooms are cool in summer and warm in winter, and each one has its own individual style. Two of the rooms have their own independent entrance. The Wisteria room also has a fireplace, and the Lily room an ancient (but fully working) wood burning stove. Breakfast is served in the hospitable dining room.

Exterior Facilities Courtyard / Garden / Parking

Exterior Details A pine-tree-lined avenue leads to the inside courtyard, a fabulous spot for lingering in the warm sunshine, or enjoying dinner by candlelight. Facing the courtyard there is a romantic Italian style garden with a aviary for peacocks, a sunny citrus plantation with lemon, orange, tangerine and citrus trees. The kitchen-garden is at the back of the dining-room: there are plenty of herbs, cultivated in a traditional way.

Further Details The kitchen ‘belongs’ to Rosalba, a passionate and creative chef. She leads a team of local women in a cuisine that incorporates all the produce of the farm, using ancient recipes passed down through many generations. Throughout the summer months you will eat under the stars in the courtyard. Even if you book for a fortnight and eat in the restaurant every day, you will hardly ever eat the same dish. The dining room has the vault and floor made of stone. In summer, you dine outside. The service is good without being formal. Breakfast is one of the most important events of the day - Armando and Rosalba give it all their attention. In the breakfast room, warm and comfortable, everyone has their place and can choose from a variety of biscuits, cakes and sweets, all made on the farm. The jams too are homemade, same as the juices, using fruit from our own trees.
