Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
Colletta is set in a rural landscape and is one of 4 villages comprising the comune of Castelbianco. It is surrounded by spectacular hills with a network of ancient mule tracks linking all the villages. During your walks you will come across many of the local flora: thyme, rosemary, mushrooms, chestnuts, cherries and figs as well as wild berries, grapes and more. If you are lucky you may also catch a glimpse of a wild boar or perhaps of the eagles who nest in the nearby mountain-tops. A 15 minute drive from Colletta will take you to the Roman town of Albenga with its fascinating walled historical centre. The sandy beaches of the Italian Riviera such as Alassio, Laigueglia and Finale Ligure are all a short drive away and they too have fascinating old towns well worth exploring.

Further Details Colletta di Castelbianco is a stunningly beautiful medieval hill-top village, situated in the mountainous hinterland of the Pennavaire valley in Liguria, a short distance from the historic town of Albenga and the Italian Riviera. The village was gradually abandoned by its inhabitants during the twentieth century and by the 1950’s had fallen into picturesque ruins. However, in the 1980’s the visionary Italian architect Giancarlo De Carlo drew up a restoration plan which would renovate the ancient settlement using the original materials and building techniques and at the same time provide a sophisticated technological infrastructure to allow future inhabitants to benefit from the highest level of telecommunications resources. Today, the stone houses and narrow streets have been totally restored and the windows look out once more over the olive and cherry terraces of the valley. There are 25 apartments available to rent in Colletta, all individual and of different sizes, alike only in the way they have been restored with a respect for the aesthetics of the ancient stone arching stairways and vaulted ceilings whilst discreetly incorporating contemporary high technology. Additionally there is a Meeting Room facility that is available to rent as it is an ideal venue for workshops, team building and training functions. During the spring and autumn we offer painting and Italian courses, plus the option of guided walks. Recently a Sculpture Park has been inaugurated in Colletta organised by the charity the "Bernard Noble Sculpture Foundation" and each year there is a prize awarded for a sculpture by young and up-coming sculptors from the UK or Italy. We now have 2 fascinating sculptures set in the grounds of Colletta & a third will be added in 2010.

What visitors have said about Colletta di Castelbianco

The village is set in an amazing location and has been restored sympathetically, maintaining its sense of age and history. The view from our balcony across to the surrounding hills, was spectacular. The waymarked local walks which can be undertaken from the village itself are well worth doing. Routes maps were available from the local Osteria (as well as being prominently displayed on boards in each of the surrounding villages). The walks are graded in difficulty and take you through old terraces, olive groves, wooded hillsides, picturesque ruins and pretty lanes, as well as the surrounding villages. In the heat of summer they are best undertaken in the cool of the morning. The Osteria (Inn) in the village is worth a visit. It serves quality simple fare and the views from the terrace are amazing (particularly at dusk).

The village of Colleta is amazing. A beautiful location and the village has been restored to an excellent standard. I think it would be rare to find such a comfortable convenient yet old setting. Waking up in and driving up to the village was beautiful - very clean and relaxing.
Susan Jackson Cousin,    UK,    Sep 2009

We enjoyed the quiet of the village, as we were early not many people about. Nice walks and views.
Sally Witt,    UK,    Apr 2009

...Peace and quiet, and uniqueness of the village, together with the amazing artwork to be found even in the smallest of village churches....The village had been rebuilt - probably would have been lost to crumble away if not redeveloped into a holiday village - would be a sad loss.

Thank you for making our 2nd year in Colletta so fantastic. We might not have had the weather but we certainly had the company :-) Thank you. Px
