General Info |
|
| |
Hóll is a charming period cottage built in 1895 which has been lovingly restored to its original condition and tastefully furnished with both antique and modern furniture. While remaining faithful to the traditional look and feel of the 19th century, Hóll also includes all modern conveniences. Most of the original materials were retained during the refurbishment of the cottage. Period furniture from the 19th century along with modern furniture, art and technology have been employed throughout the cottage. In 2003 Reykjavik Town Council gave Hóll Cottage a restoration grant. |

Further Details |
The house at Grotagata 12 (Hóll Cottage) was erected in 1890 by a local carpenter Bjarni Jonsson. In 1895 the house was extended to the present size. Also in 1895 he built the annex to the house where stood previously an old torfhouse. The house is on one floor with a loft and a basement, timberhouse with corregated iron roof; a typical Danish-Icelandic type of house from that period. Bjarni owned the house until 1902.After that Sigridur Hannesdottir and her family owned the house until 1946, when Reykjavik Town Council bought the house. Fifty years later 1996 Paul Newton bought and restored the house and annexe with the help of the architects Jon Nordsteien og Olafur Flygenring. The house is a good representation of houses built in Reykjavik at the end of the 19th century.

Thank you for allowing us to experience your lovingly restored Holl Cottage. It made our Icelandic vacation both unique and memorable. We loved your home away from home. Holl cottage is a marvellous home base for touring.

What a lovely time at the Holl Cottage! The location was fabulous, the house so cosy, this trip was memorable for us for many reasons, and getting home to a lovely cottage was one of them. We will be back someday with our children (first we need to get married and have kids!) Thank you for the great home you have so carefully created and preserved.

Thank you for everything! The welcome was wonderful, with delicious fruits, bread, pastries, cheeses and all ready for us on our arrival, making for a splendid welcome. The Holl cottage is a treasure we have enjoyed immensely during our stay in Reykjavik. Evening dinners around the table with the beautiful bouquet of lilies were a treat. Thank you very very much.
