The Stone House is a lovingly-restored 18th-century archondikon (aristocratic residence) set atop a steep hillside overlooking the breathtaking Hydra harbor. General Info |
|
| |
Hydra itself measures 6km across at its widest point, and is 23km long. Much of the island is rocky and mountainous, making for dramatic coastal scenery as the crags drop to the sea. Olive, almond, and pine trees flourish here, despite dry summers, though some of Hydra's pine forests were destroyed in the wildfires of 2008. Spring brings a surprising array of bright wildflowers, carpeting hills in bright yellows, soft purples, and sprinkles of ruby red. Please bear in mind that visitors to Hydra are required to climb stairs, so the Stone House is not suitable for anyone unable to do so. Typically, we arrange for donkeys to transport visitors' luggage from the port to the property – a truly unique Hydra experience! Donkeys can also be hired to transport groceries and supplies from the village to the house. |

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation |
|
| |
The inhabited islands of Spetses, Poros, and Aegina are nearby, and can be seen in a daytrip, as can some of the towns of the Peloponnesus. Small, uninhabited islets lie within view off the coast and to the south. Hydra cradles a bustling harbor packed with shops, restaurants, and quayside cafes perfect for sipping a leisurely cappuccino and people-watching. Tiny cobblestone lanes and winding limestone staircases crisscross the island's villages - there are no cars or scooters! With the exception of a few micro utility vehicles, donkeys and carts provide the island's only land transportation. Be prepared to walk and wander, whether through the historic architecture of Hydra town, the sleepy fishing village of Kamini, or along the gorgeous craggy coastline trails. Or, for the lover of nightlife, party into the wee hours, sleep late, and swim off the rocks in the cerulean sea. |

Further Details |
The Stone House is owned and tended by a family who has been spending time on Hydra for the past four decades. Visitors to the Stone House will enjoy the special privilege of being received at the port by Alexis, our on-island concierge and Hydra resident. She will introduce you to the house and share with you her knowledge of the sights and secrets of Hydra. Although you will have complete privacy during your stay, assistance or advice will only be a phone call away. Our aim is to make you as comfortable as we can, while also granting you access to real Greek island life. To that end, we stock the house with Korres natural bath products, filtered drinking water, wine, beer, soda, coffee, tea, fresh fruit, cheese and bread upon arrival. Firewood is also provided during the colder seasons. We are happy to organize any additional provisions you may need; those requests are typically handled at the time of booking. We provide weekly maid service as part of the rental fee. More frequent service can be organized for an additional fee. Some of the comforts of the Stone House include: wireless internet access, Bose iPod speaker dock, a furnished kitchen, washer and dryer, three fireplaces, and weekly maid service.

What visitors have said about The Stone House |
| |
| |
When the time came to plan a father-son getaway for myself and my 4-year-old son, I reached out to Olive and Stone and planned a trip to the wonderful island of Hydra. Kate and Alexis were very professional in handling our reservation and the Stone House is possibly the most magnificent home I have ever had the privilege of staying in. My son enjoyed fishing with the local boys at the port in the morning and swimming in the many natural bays around the island. Hydra is an ideal environment for children and the Stone House, with its excellent & qualified staff, served as a cherished sanctuary for our extended stay.

Marvelous house with its well-kept character and charm. Hydra gave us, for the second year, all the Greek atmosphere that we love. Thank you to Kate and Alexis for arranging such a house for rent with all the details to make you feel like you are in your own home.

We could not have chosen a more romantic, private island and house for our honeymoon. We enjoyed coffee in the cafes looking over the harbor, delicious Greek food in quaint restaurants (with clean kitchens—we were invited to see them all!), long walks with breath-taking views, refreshing swims, sunbathing on the rocks, meandering around town, and stunning sunsets from the terrace and the road winding along the cliffs. It is hard to describe the peace that envelops the Stone House. The master bedroom is a great retreat for naps in the afternoon and late night stargazing with the distant sound of harbor nightlife. Thank you so much for a wonderful time we will never forget.
