Crete is a beautiful island and the landscape is quite breathtaking; the blue Mediterranean sea, the high mountain ranges, the scents from orange blossoms in early spring to wild mountain herbs in late summer. Wonderful for hiking – the European Trekking route E4 passes just 3km from the village. There are riding stables 10 mins away. For golfers, there’s an 18 hole PGA design course 20 minutes away. For the children, a water park 10 minutes from the villa and a fabulous aquarium 15 minutes away. Mountain biking and paragliding are both also on offer a 20 minute drive away. If it’s history and culture you’re after, head for the Minoan Palaces, the Venetian fortress of Spinalonga or the various archaeological museums. During Summer there are often music festivals. You can even try your hand at Greek cooking lessons at the villa, or we can organise for a therapist to come to the villa to give you a massage or yoga session.

Further Details Just the right place to spend a wonderful and relaxing holiday in Greece. Tourism has hardly touched this village and “filoxenia” (Greek for hospitality) is simply the motto of Episkopi. A tradition deeply rooted in the Cretan way of life. The name Episkopi dates back to the second Byzantine period on Crete. During this time the bishop seat of the coastal village Hersonissos was moved further inland. Episkopi means bishop seat. Many small Byzantine churches with frescos from the Cretan School of Renaissance (14th/15th century) are found in and around the village. The main source of income is from agriculture. Olive groves and vineyards surround the villages. Life moves with a different pace compared to the coastal tourist areas. This is Crete the way it was and the way it is meant to be. For your food shopping you will find a baker, pastry shop, butcher, supermarkets and green grocer. There is also a barber shop, post office, bank (ATM), chemist/pharmacy, medical center, card phone, 2 taxis, bus service to/from Heraklion 3x daily, gas/petrol and a police station. For eating out (lunch/dinner) there are tavernas in Episkopi and area. Free delivery from local taverna to villa. Also a must is a visit to one of the traditional cafés “kafeneia” for a cup of “Greek” coffee or ouzo, raki, wine or beer served with“mezedes” (Greek style appetizers).

What visitors have said about Villa Helidona

Dear Dimitri - we have been coming to Crete for many years, but have never enjoyed such a beautiful house and friendly village. We've had a very relaxing week around the pool and peaceful countryside. Thank you.
Harrington,  UK,  May 2003

Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday in your home. The pool is spectacular and the location in the village, away from other tourists, couldn't be better. The villagers showed us such kind hospitality with their gifts of grapes, wine and melons and made us feel very much at home. Episkopi is a little piece of heaven.
Robertson,  London,  Sep 2003

Dimitris, thank you very much for a very special, wonderful holiday. Villa Helidona is unique and it has been a privilege for us to have been yours guests.
Laurie,  USA,  Aug 2005

A fascinating house in a friendly village, away from the noise and bustle of the coast. We've enjoyed looking at all your interesting objects and watching the swallows skimming over the pool. A perfect place to unwind.
Beswick,  UK,  May 2006

With no much explanation, you are about to experience the best days in your life in this wonderful space. This is the best house we have ever entered and truly magic place which will be remembered for the rest of our life.
Cvetkovic,  Servia,  Sep 2006

A lovely haven of peace. A beautiful house and charming host. Who needs dolphins to swim with? The swallows are superb giving hours of acrobatic entertainment. Thank you Dimitri for the privilege of staying in your house.
