A lovingly renovated 19th century Windmill in the Vendee region of France... an ideal setting for a holiday in a windmill - a romantic honeymoon or special occasion at any time of the year. The Moulin is set just outside a small village. The only noise comes from church bells and the sound of sheep in the surrounding fields. |

General Info |
|
| |
The Moulin at St Cyr Des Gats was built in 1885 and provided local people and businesses with flour for many years. In 1975 the original workings were removed and the building was changed from a working Windmill into what can only be very loosely termed a residence. The Moulin was put up for sale and remained without a buyer for approximately five years. During a big storm in 1999, one set of the sails was blown off and the Windmill looked to be in a sorry state. The current owner purchased the mill in June 2001, and the long arduous process of renovating it began. Since the renovation, hundreds of people have been able to live their dream of having a holiday in a windmill. |

It is arranged over four floors, a lovely modern kitchen with granite work surface, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge / freezer and a breakfast table is situated on the ground floor. A curved wrought iron staircase leads up to the living area, furnished with two leather easy chairs and houses a wood burning stove to warm up chilly spring or autumn / winter evenings. The original wooden staircase rises to the second floor landing and a beautiful modern bathroom, with large shower cubicle, basin and WC. Onwards and upwards, a wrought iron staircase rises, quite sharply, to the bedroom with double bed and a beautiful view. There is a foldaway bed available should you wish to holiday with a friend and not share the bedroom.

Further Details |
St Cyr des Gats has a Cafe / Bar, Restaurant, Boulangerie, Post Office, Church and Hairdressers. A small Supermarket (Spar), Cash point, Butchers, Chemist and Patisserie can be found in La Calliere, 6 kms away. A great location for Cycling with many routes both locally and around the Mervent Forest. Clear starry night skies are a regular feature, beautiful for anyone that enjoys astrology. The Vendee is famous for numerous gently sloping beaches which are ideal for water sports or just sunbathing. The region is also noted for the 'Venise Vert' (Green Venice) canal system, and walking around the Mervent area. For the connoisseur the Vendée is surrounded on three sides by the Loire, Cognac and Bordeaux. Inland the landscape is dominated by vineyards and sunflower fields with small villages every few miles. Ideal for a quiet holiday in the sun, the Vendée is said to equal anywhere in France for hours of sunshine each year. The climate means the season extends from Easter to late October - the average monthly temperature in September is 70 degrees. Not a bad spot for a holiday in a windmill.

What visitors have said about Moulin85 |
| |
| |
"Blooming marvelous!!!"
Mr & Mrs Scholz, Birmingham, UK., Oct 2009
|
On arrival we were overwhelmed by the Windmill and it's surroundings. We sat in the BBQ area and drank wine till 9.30pm....thought we had arrived in heaven.
Everything about the Windmill is as everybody else says but if I can add, as a Chartered Surveyor, it is one of the most impressive and sympathetic restorations I have encountered.
Mr & Mrs Hamilton, Middleton, UK., Sep 2009
|
We really loved our stay at the Windmill. We were so impressed with all of the restoration and decorating - definately sets a high standard......
Mr & Mrs Scrivener, London, UK., Aug 2009
|
Well, what can we say that hasn't already been stated? Great Moulin, great location, fantastic views. Peace, quiet, outdoor living. Sunshine on our shoulders, wind in our hair - we loved it!
2 weeks still isn't enough to see everything. Local farm very helpful - great eggs and lamb.
Only downside being sometimes wine and scrabble don't mix!!
Mr & Mrs Worley, Birmingham, UK., Jan 2009
|
Our windmill adventure started on the Friday evening with a long journey from Manchester...the heavy rain stopped for us on arrival at the windmill and a peaceful night was had. Despite the long drive, it was a magical place to find - the excitement kicked in whilst exploring each floor.
You can see the love, time and heartache (!) that has gone into renovating this lovely windmill, it's a really special little place. I am so pleased we came across it.....
Ms Parks, Manchester, UK., Sep 2009

What an amazing windmill. I don't think we can add any more praise than has already been heaped on you in the previous pages, but we would like to anyway....it's fabulous, a brilliant, faithful restoration and beautifully, aptly furnished too...Love the bedroom lights!
We have had a lovely relaxing time in a unique building......
Ms Grilli & Mr Cookman, Essex, UK.

The windmill is a truly fantastic place, the care and attention (and no doubt the expense) is plain to see.......We found it to be a wonderfully peaceful retreat and really has been a relaxing week....
Altogether, staying here has been an interesting experience and one which we have very much enjoyed. Batteries have been thoroughly recharged.
M Hurley, Osnabruck, Germany, Jul 2009

What a memorable few days we have spent in this lovely peaceful place! The Windmill has been sympathetically restored and thoughtfully equipped. We could happily have stayed here much longer if time had permitted.
We have been blessed with the weather in this past week and therefore have been able to eat breakfast and dinner outside each day, maximising the use of the excellent BBQ........
Mr & Mrs Brook, York, UK.

If you want to escape the rat race but still have access to the beautiful surroundings / sights, this is the ideal location.
The Moulin has been tastefully & beautifully renovated & is well equipped....On the whole a lovely part of the world. Would and will recommend it.
Mr & Mrs Mansfield, Herts, UK.

The Windmill is, without a doubt, lovely and we have enjoyed our stay here very much. As my Mother would say, "It's very well appointed"!.............
We have been greatly blessed by the weather and so have spent many happy hours sitting in the BBQ area watching the sun go down (with the odd glass of wine, of course!) ..........
Mr & Mrs Warren, Carlisle, UK., Jun 2009
|
Thank you for a wonderful time in a magical place. Having arrived at 2am from Paris it was bliss to wake up to silence and a tranquil view.
Daytrips to La Rochelle, Vouvant and Mervent were very enjoyable, but it's the degree of care that has gone into the detail at the Windmill that really made the holiday. The stove, the games, the basket of logs, those canny light switches all add to the experience.......
S Chomik, Paris, May 2009
|
A beautifully restored windmill! You can tell the love and care that went into renovating this historic place............................We had a great week - the perfect escape from city life. Congratulations on a great restoration job.
Thanks again for an amazingly well equipped gite, with lovely rooms. The bedroom is by far the nicest we've ever stayed in, in a gite.
A Christafis, Paris, Apr 2009
