General Info |

River Cottage is a characterful and rustic cottage with swimming pool, in hot south west France with stupendous rural views. An idyllic rural haven, this beautiful cottage is full of character with original oak beams, fire places and tomette floors, yet updated with modern bathrooms and swimming pool, located in a peaceful setting amidst the rolling hills of the Vienne. Built into the limestone hills in the 16th century River Cottage was originally used as an almshouse for pilgrims on the route to Santiago (St James) de Compostella in N.W. Spain. The sloping nature of the limestone rocks gives the cottage a very special character and many different venues for sunning, snoozing and alfresco dining. |

La Bordeliere is a little hamlet of 4 houses and the local area is very rural. You are in the depths of the countryside, with fantastic views from the terraces. A lane runs past the house, but true to character it is not tarmac but stone. It leads down to a ford and a footbridge over a river from where the cottage gets its name. Ponds have established themselves along the side of the river and you can hear the bullfrogs in season. We have seen red squirrels and otters by the house and in the field in front of it. There are many local walking tracks around the area called chemins. You can walk to the local village of Journet.
The summers are hot and there are lots of local attractions, but you are off the beaten track so it is not crowded.
There are lakes nearby with swimming facilities. |

Exterior Details |
To the front of the property you have a paved patio with hammock, swing seat and other outdoor furniture. This area is west facing and gets the sun in the afternoon and evenings. Across the lane is the hard standing area where you can park your car. This is also the entrance to our field and large summer swimming pool area, with pleasant paved terraces for sunbathing. A large swing seat and daybed both overlook the pool, where the less energetic can relax and watch the swimming activities. Meals can be enjoyed under the shady trees as there is another dining table here and a boules court.
Stone steps lead up to the back of the property. Here is a courtyard with brand new furniture. On the stone balcony is an original stone Limousin sink which was used by ancient travellers for washing their hands before entering the almshouse. We have installed an awning for when it becomes really hot and there is a gas barbecue.A wooden veranda runs across the front of the house from the kitchen.

What visitors have said about River Cottage |
| |
| |
"It was a lovely house situated in natural surroundings and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were very well looked after and felt welcome by Les and Maureen Morton. We would love to stay in the house again. There are lovely walks and things to see, but most of all it is the atmosphere of the house and area that we enjoyed."

We had a wonderful time staying in La Bordeliere. We loved the property and enjoyed exploring all the places nearby. We were lucky and had some great weather so really appreciated all the places to sit around the property in or out of the sun. We all agreed it was a really memorable place to stay and would have liked even longer to read through some more of your great book collection. A very relaxing holiday.

We had a great holiday in this unusual house. We loved the original features of beams, tiles etc.. and the region is lovely for a holiday as was quiet even in August.
