The owners of La Maree are keen gardeners and enjoyed living in the cottage whilst their barn was being renovated; they will be glad to help you settle in, show you all the information available on the area, and can be on hand if needed. Apart from a few sheep and chickens, the couple next door cultivate mainly vines, wheat, maize - and those fabulous sunflowers!

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
The gentle hills and coastal scenery make it an excellent area for walking or cycling (two bicycles are available free of charge) whilst the mixed terrain of farmland and marsh attracts a wide variety of birds. One of France's prettiest villages, Talmont, can be reached by bike along a spectacular coastal route. Known locally as the “Cote de Beaute”, this stretch of coast is popular for its calm waters and soft sand. The village of Meschers is 10 minutes by car and offers several good swimming and sunbathing beaches. Continuing up the coast, there are prize-winning beaches at the towns of St Georges de Didonne and Royan. The thriving town of Royan offers a wide selection of shops and restaurants, in addition to an extensive daily market. During summer there are numerous boat trips to outlying islands and lighthouses (like 17th century Cordouan), as well as a regular ferry to the Médoc peninsular. Bordeaux city itself is just over an hour away by car and the well known town of Cognac

Further Details This coastal region enjoys a mild climate and long sunny days from spring through to late autumn. The area is ideal for couples or families looking for unspoilt countryside not too far from amenities. Historically it was on one of the main pilgrimage routes to Spain and is dotted with ancient villages, abbeys and exquisite Romanesque churches. In the slow passing of the seasons, there is still a great feeling of timelessness, suffused with the warm vibrant light of the South. A welcome pack is provided - containing breakfast items and a bottle of wine! A library of books and DVDs is available and there's a large file of carefully researched information on the local area. English owners, Caroline and Christina, will be on hand to welcome you and offer assistance.

What visitors have said about La Maree

Of course, the moules and oysters are divine and I did practically live off them all week. The best escargots à la bordelaise, ever, were at Les Monards (of course!)
Zoe, Sean & George,  UK,  Aug 2010

We had a really good holiday and loved the area... We hadn't expected such lovely beaches and small ports, all so near to the inland countryside too.
Ian and Brenda,  UK,  Jun 2010

"The beds were very comfortable and the garden was lovely ... Thanks again for a wonderful week, and all the DVDs you kept us supplied with. It makes such a difference staying in a cottage where the owners really care about their guests having a great holiday."
Brian & Cath,  Edinburgh,  Apr 2008

The cottage has been great - you have thought of everything. The information file was worth its weight in gold - excellent!
