The chateau is beautifully decorated by skilled artisans, with incredible marble and parquet floors, decorative paint on the walls, and antiques. Each floor has a different style. The garden floor is for the family and has large living spaces and an enormous open fireplace. The ground floor has beautiful reception rooms, built to impress and to entertain in style. The first floor bedrooms are beautiful, with some amazing antique beds. The top floor feels more like a manor house in style, with exposed beams.
The chateau is approached by a long drive - 1 km long. The last third is lined with beech and lime trees that create a beautiful avenue. Behind the chateau is a formal french garden bounded by a chapel and a pavilion. To one side is another formal garden - the Italian Garden - with stone benches and nooks. There is also an orchard with the pool at the far side. Next to the pool is the stable block which has been restored to provide a large galleried dining room which can easily seat 30 people. There is also a fully equipped kitchen and two changing rooms with showers and WCs. All these areas are surrounded by the estate's woods and farmland, including some commercial orchards.
The house was originally constructed in 1641 by Francois de la Haye and at that time was a" manoir" rather than a chateau, being much smaller than it is now. It was then enlarged in about 1720, when the chapel and pavillion were also built. During the French Revolution, the family was protected as Francois son married the younger sister of the wife of the Marquis de La Fayette who was a prominent revolutionary. However the house did have an important role in the revolution as it acted as a safe house where escaping aristocrats waited after escaping from Paris down the Seine whilst waiting for favorable winds to sail from Barfleur in the Seine estuary to England. 150 years later, the house played a similar role as it was a safe-house for allied soldiers escaping back to the UK. However partly because of this activity, the Gestapo occupied the house for 18 months. The religious figures on the top floor were brought from Bavaria by some of the Gestapo and left behind when they vacated the house in a hurry in June 1944.
