General Info |

Mark and Fiona Berridge came to Normandy looking for a cottage but when offered the chance to buy Chateau Le Mont Epinguet, a magnificent historic building just 8 kms from Cherbourg, the decision was an easy one. Today Mark and Fiona run the chateau as an informal guest house - offering bed and breakfast or hiring three separate buildings to self-catering groups – the main chateau (sleeps 27), the Carriage House (sleeps 12), and Mews Cottage (sleeps 5). Built in 1751, Chateau Le Mont Epinguet stood originally in 2,000 acres. During the war, the chateau was occupied by the Germans as a communications headquarters. Now it is being lovingly restored to its former glory. Not your average gite in Normandy! |

Interior Details |
The building dates from 1751 and has many unusual features and plenty of space - giant oak beams, Douglas redwood floors, 18th Century local stone fireplaces, an unusual dome shaped kitchen and 5 sets of French windows. Furnishings are also in keeping where possible - the beds being mainly 18th Century copies with comfortable mattresses, and the bathrooms include roll-top baths reflecting a comfort and opulance of a bygone age. There are three lounges, a dining room, a very large double hall (suitable for banquets!) and two kitchens (fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, range cooker etc). There are eleven bedrooms, made up of three triples, two quadruples, two twins and four doubles. There are six bathrooms.

Further Details |
The Contentin peninsula of Normandy is perhaps best known for its war memorials and the D-Day landing beaches. But this beautiful part of Normandy - which was the wealthiest region of France in the 18th Century - offers some superb scenery, a labyrinth of ancient rambling paths, elegant chateaux and medieval manoirs, gastronomic pleasures (including fresh seafood specialities), pretty regional markets and superb bathing beaches on the west coast opposite Jersey.

What visitors have said about Chateau le Mont Epinguet |
| |
| |
I rented the Chateau la Monte Epingle last weekend for a birthday party with 28 guests. The chateau was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. It was just like being at home (albeit a very large version of home) and so comfortable and 'lived in' that we did not have to worry about the children or dogs and everyone was able to enjoy themselves. The rooms were large enough to get everyone together around the open fire in one room when we wanted but with 4 living rooms there was space for us to spread out between a dance area and a number of quieter rooms in the evenings. The surrounding forest was perfect for walking and we collected pockets full of... ...chestnuts to roast over the fire. Despite appearing to be really isolated, the chateau was actually within just a few minutes' drive of a major road, so it was easy to get to and from the ports and the Normandy beaches and other places of interest. Fiona and Marc were very helpful with information about things to do locally and in their recommendation of James and his team, who organised a dinner party for us on one of the nights we were at the chateau. All in all it was a great venue and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to rent a large house in France.
