General Info |
|

Escape to your perfect holiday retreat in the beautiful, rolling countryside of the Cevennes, a stunning but little known part of the South of France, yet only 1.5 hours from the Mediterranean and 1 hour's picturesque drive from Nimes Airport. This part of France is renowned for Robert Louis Stevenson's travels and his subsequent book "Travels with a Donkey" which recounts his exploits.
The village of Portes, famous for its Chateau is situated only 15 minutes walk from the house and is open to the public. In Portes you will find a bar/cafe, a bakery for your fresh bread, pains au chocolat, croissants as well as pizzas, etc. and the excellent, good-value restaurant, Le Relais du Chateau. The house is secluded but not isolated and only a minute's drive from the main road. There is a lockable barrier at the top and access is private. Both the buildings you will see belong to us. |

Exterior Details |
Outside, the large "open" terrace is accessed through French windows where you can enjoy watching buzzard overhead as well as smaller birds using the peanut feeders. The peaceful terrace has sunshine from early morning until late afternoon so we have our meals out here, sometimes also in winter if it's warm enough. There is a table and parasol, seating for six, as well as sunloungers and cushions. On the other side of the building is the "covered" terrace. This too benefits from a long table and plenty of padded seating. There are numerous cherry, apple, damson, willow and mimosa trees. As an added bonus, a family of wild boar and deer may visit on quiet evenings. There can be few better endings to a summer's day than sitting with a glass of wine and good food in perfect peace looking over the valley.

Further Details |
There is an endless choice of activities, beginning with walking and cycling from the door of the house. Gliding, hang-gliding, paragliding, canoeing, golf, tennis, horse & donkey trekking, markets, caves to explore and an adventure park as well as clear river swimming, are all close by. There is also the Haribo sweet factory in Uzes. St Ambroix and Uzes are worthy of a visit, especially for the markets selling country produce, Provencal pottery and lace. Uzes is one of the most attractive towns in France - preserved from being ruined by not being on a major route. Its narrow lanes, renaissance houses and arcades are very pretty. Historic Nimes is what draws the crowds centering on the two storey Roman arena, Les Arenes. All the roads seem to lead to this imposing edifice which seats 20,000 spectators and is the premier side for bull fighting outside Spain. The venue is also used for concerts.

What visitors have said about Mas des Grailles |
| |
| |
We all absolutely adored Mas des Grailles. After 10 years of visiting France and staying in gites in various areas I would say that Mas des Grailles was the best we have stayed in. All the necessary facilities, great balconies, great weather, lovely and peaceful. You certainly have a gem of a property.

Many, many thanks for a wonderful time in your mas. We all enjoyed the peace and tranquility and the abundant space to each do our own thing! The area is stunning and we had some great days out driving off the beaten track. I was very reluctant to leave. Thank you too for the bottle of wine, really very kind of you.
