General Info |
|
| |
Our house is perfect for families with children, as it is located on a small track with only one other house and has its own private garden. This is possibly one of the most peaceful and scenic locations you can find in the area – we’re away from the main “tourist roads” and yet close to everything that makes the Aude district and the Hautes-Pyrenees such a lovely place for a holiday. With only one other house nearby (which doesn’t overlook the garden), the track our house is on leads directly into the forest and there are a number of walking routes through beautiful scenery. Within a short drive, you can travel through spectacular gorges, tiny villages set on the side of the mountain and rolling pastures – and visit ancient Cathar castles, traditional markets and extensive vineyards. |

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation |
|
| |
Two small, traditional villages – with small lanes barely wide enough to drive along – are both less than 1km away, and you can walk through either of these directly into the surrounding hills.
From the top of “our mountain” you can drive in three directions – all incredibly scenic and within many places to stop and enjoy the views or sample some local cuisine. The first takes you along the river Aude to the village of Axat – from here you can take the 100-year-old railway the 'Pays Cathare Tourist Train', 60 km of track running over impressive viaducts and through tunnels on open air carriages. The second direction heads to Escouloubre-les-Bains and on to the ski resort of Les Angles, where there is a lake surrounded by forest with kayaks, windsurfers and pedalos for hire. The third takes you through the Col de Jau, passing through the lovely listed village of Mosset and the spa resort of Molitg-les-Bains.

Our house is cozy and well-equipped and we’ve taken a lot of care in choosing everything inside to make it feel like a home away from home. We have produced our own “welcome book”, which is in the house and includes details of nearby restaurants, local grocery shops, plus timing for the local market vans that visit the village. In addition, there are many maps and brochures, a great selection of books and DVDs for adults and children, and even free broadband internet for those who can never quite ”get away from it all”

Exterior Details |
The patio doors of our house open onto a small secluded garden and a terrace with table and chairs, with direct views of the surrounding hills. If the night is clear, the lack of light pollution results in a spectacular starry vista in almost complete silence except for the owls. The garden is a haven for insects and wildlife and has intentionally been left slightly untamed to encourage them to linger. Come at the right time of year and enjoy the wild strawberries!

Loved our stay here and did plenty of walking and exploring. Wish we were staying another week!

The setting of the cottage was magnificent and had total rest, relaxation and peace and quiet, with lots of mountain walks and beautiful scenery. Got very friendly with locals and went to the village pub, enjoyed the village life very much with plenty of BBQs. We stayed for a month and the weather was very hot throughout, but cooler at night. All in all a lovely holiday and we enjoyed our stay very much.

We have really loved our time here. The cottage makes a lovely base. Surrounding countryside is wonderful! We have visited a number of the Cathar chateax - strongly recommend sturdy shoes and a bottle of water as most involve a steep path. Rennes le Chateau is worth a visit too.Carcassonne is well worth the drive and the Cite is incredible - we have left a walking guide at your house. A great holiday!

Scenery stunning, whole area and every castle and abbey worth a visit.

We had a very pleasant break here enjoying the mountains. The castles at Carcassonne and Puilaurens are a must. We also visited the market at Esperaza which was great for local produce. We did some local walks which were really nice, especially the one through the woods to the bridge (no.7). Basically if you just want to get away from it all this is the place to come.

A lovely house with everything we needed for a relaxing week. BBQ was great and served us well every evening - we have enjoyed the quiet, the fresh air and the mountains. No TV, no radio, no Blackberry reception - perfect! Walks from the house are easy and enjoyable, driving over some of the "Cols" very exciting. Eagles at the ski station at Mijanes and crested tits outside the bedroom window - excellent.
Everyone recommends something - so we recommend doing very little, sleeping well and unwinding!

We had a very quiet week, enjoying the scenery and surrounding attractions, eating, reading and doing nothing. Variety was the keynote - it's hard to say what was best.We enjoyed local walks; a drive to Axat stopping at Mijanes for the bakery and a visit to the ruined forge, then back over the Col and down the Gorges de Rebenty; a walk from the Col de Jau towards the Madre; a ride on the train from Axat; and a tour to the chateau at Puilaurens - spectacular.
